Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Slaughter

By Monday morning, my life had completely disintegrated.

I received an urgent, mandatory summons from the board of directors at my firm. I walked into the glass-walled conference room, expecting to face my partners and beg for a chance to quietly resign and return the embezzled funds before the SEC got involved.

Instead, I walked into an execution.

Sitting at the head of the massive oak table, wearing a razor-sharp navy blazer and looking more radiant and powerful than I had ever seen her, was Claire.

“What is she doing here?” I demanded, looking at my senior partners.

None of them looked at me. They all stared at their legal pads.

Claire calmly opened a file folder. “Take a seat, David.”

“You have no right to be here, Claire,” I hissed, my face burning with humiliation. “This is a closed corporate board meeting.”

“Actually, David, I have every right to be here,” Claire replied, her voice smooth and chillingly calm. “When we incorporated this firm five years ago, my grandfather’s trust provided the seed money. You were so eager to get your hands on the capital that you didn't read the morality and fraud clauses in the foundational bylaws.”

A sickening dread washed over me.

“Clause 4, Section B,” Claire recited flawlessly, sliding a highlighted document across the table. “If any managing partner is found to be engaged in financial fraud, embezzlement, or activities that incur severe reputational damage to the firm, their equity shares are immediately forfeited and transferred to the primary majority stakeholder.”

She looked up, her green eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering dominance.

“That’s me, David. I am the primary stakeholder. As of 8:00 AM this morning, you own zero percent of this company. You are officially terminated.”

May you like

“You can’t do this,” I gasped, the reality of my absolute ruin finally crushing the breath from my lungs. “I built this firm! I have nothing else!”

“You had a family,” Claire corrected softly, the steel in her voice cutting straight to my bone. “You threw it away for a hotel room and a cheap thrill. Now, you have exactly what you deserve. Security will escort you out of the building. My divorce attorneys will contact you this afternoon.”
