Chapter 1 - The Dance of Deception

The moment my fingers closed around Giovanni Fierro’s outstretched hand, the atmospheric pressure in the Belmont Grand ballroom fundamentally shifted. His grip was firm, radiating a sudden, grounding heat that rushed straight up my arm, steadying the humiliating tremor in my knees. I had expected to feel like a prop, a desperate woman playing along with a stranger’s bizarre game. Instead, as he smoothly pulled me from my chair and tucked my hand into the crook of his arm, I felt an intoxicating, terrifying surge of absolute power.

We walked toward the center of the polished dance floor, and it was like parting the Red Sea.

The low hum of polite wedding chatter died instantly, replaced by a frantic, buzzing wave of whispers. I kept my chin high, acutely aware of the twice-repaired heel of my thrift-store shoe clicking against the hardwood, but Giovanni walked beside me as if I were draped in diamonds. He wore a bespoke tuxedo as black as a starless night, the tailoring so precise it looked dangerous. As we stopped in the center of the room, he turned to face me. He placed one large, warm hand on my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, and took my other hand in his.

"Breathe, Jessica," Giovanni murmured, his amber eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the rest of the room blur. His voice was a rich, dark baritone, vibrating over the slow jazz melody drifting from the orchestra. "You look like you're preparing for an execution."

"I feel like I'm committing a crime," I whispered back, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. "Who are you? The man at the next table literally stopped speaking mid-sentence when he heard your name."

The corner of Giovanni’s mouth curled into a faint, wicked smile. The thin, pale scar along his strong jawline caught the light of the crystal chandeliers. "I am a man with a great deal of influence in the logistics and shipping industries of this city. And a man whose family is incredibly traditional. Which is why, for the next three minutes, you need to look at me as if I am the absolute center of your universe."

I swallowed hard, the scent of his cologne—cedar, bergamot, and something distinctly expensive—wrapping around my senses. "And what do I get in return?"

"Protection," he answered smoothly, spinning me gently so that I was facing the perimeter of the dance floor. "Look at your three o'clock."

I let my eyes drift over his broad shoulder. Standing near the towering floral arrangements, Tyler’s face had drained of all color. The smug, condescending sneer he had worn just moments ago while insulting my career and my apartment had entirely vanished. He was staring at us with his mouth slightly open, his cocktail glass frozen halfway to his lips. Beside him, Vanessa looked like she had swallowed a lemon, her hands gripping her pregnant belly defensively.

"He looks like he just saw a ghost," I whispered, a sudden, fierce spark of satisfaction igniting in my chest.

"He is looking at a man who could dismantle the architectural firm he works for with a single phone call," Giovanni corrected softly, his hand pressing slightly firmer into my lower back. "Tyler Brooks is a mid-level associate desperate for partnership. My company just acquired the firm holding his largest contract. He knows exactly who I am. And right now, his brain is short-circuiting trying to figure out how the woman he discarded managed to marry a billionaire."

My breath hitched. "Billionaire?"

"Focus, mia moglie (my wife)," Giovanni teased, dipping his head closer so his lips brushed the shell of my ear. The intimacy of the gesture sent a shiver down my spine that had absolutely nothing to do with fear. "My aunt is approaching. You need to look incredibly in love."

I didn't have to fake the blush that rushed to my cheeks. An older woman in a severe, gunmetal-gray gown was marching onto the dance floor, completely ignoring the other couples. Trailing behind her was the elegant, furious brunette from the bar.

"Giovanni," the older woman barked, coming to a halt beside us, her eyes raking over my simple dress with unfiltered disdain. "What is the meaning of this? You left Isabella at the bar to dance with... this?"

Giovanni didn't stop swaying to the music. He simply pulled me closer, his eyes turning as cold and hard as obsidian as he looked at his aunt. "Aunt Carmela, lower your voice. You are speaking to my wife."

Carmela gasped, clutching her diamond necklace. The brunette, Isabella, let out a choked noise of outrage. "Wife? Giovanni, you cannot be serious! You are supposed to announce our engagement tonight! Our fathers agreed!"

"My father is dead, Isabella, and I am the head of the Fierro family," Giovanni said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register that commanded instant submission. "I make my own arrangements. Jessica and I were married privately. We preferred to keep it out of the press until she was comfortable. But since you insisted on ambushing me tonight, consider the press embargo lifted."

He looked down at me, his amber eyes softening so dramatically I almost believed the lie myself. "Isn't that right, darling?"

"Yes," I breathed, my voice trembling slightly, but I forced myself to meet Carmela's furious glare. "We wanted it to be just the two of us."

Carmela looked like she was going to faint. She spun on her heel and stormed off the dance floor, Isabella trailing behind her in humiliated tears.

"Well," Giovanni murmured, intertwining his fingers with mine. "The trap is set. Now, we need to make it legally binding."

May you like

I stumbled, completely missing a step, but his strong arm caught me. "Wait... legally binding? I thought this was just a dance!"

"A dance solves tonight's problem, Jessica," he said, his gaze dropping to my lips. "A marriage certificate solves tomorrow's. Let's go retrieve your coat. We have a contract to negotiate."
