Chapter 4 - Shadows and Sabotage

The fake marriage was failing, not because the public suspected a lie, but because the private reality had become entirely too real.
I was falling in love with Giovanni Fierro. I loved the way he brought me coffee after a long shift at the hospital—shifts he allowed me to keep because he respected my passion for saving lives. I loved the way he patiently taught Lily how to speak Italian. And I loved the dark, consuming passion that ignited between us whenever the bedroom doors closed and the contract was forgotten in the tangled silk sheets.
But a kingdom always has enemies in the shadows.
It happened two months later at a high-profile charity auction. Giovanni had stepped away to take a call with his international shipping directors, leaving me momentarily alone at our VIP table.
"Enjoying the borrowed diamonds, Jessica?"
I turned to find Isabella, the rejected arranged bride, standing over me with a venomous smile. Beside her stood Giovanni’s Aunt Carmela, her face pinched in eternal disapproval.
"Isabella," I said politely, refusing to let them intimidate me. "Carmela. Lovely to see you both."
"Save the performance," Carmela sneered, leaning over the table. "We know the truth. Isabella’s private investigator has been digging. We know about the contract. We know you are a paid escort hired to block the merger."
My blood ran cold, the champagne turning to ash in my mouth. "That is a lie."
"Is it?" Isabella laughed, pulling a sleek tablet from her clutch. "My investigator found the private judge who signed the license. For a significant bribe, he confirmed a prenuptial agreement guaranteeing a massive payout after two years. You're a fraud. And in exactly five minutes, when the auctioneer takes a break, I am going to take the microphone, project this evidence onto the main screens, and expose Giovanni to his shareholders. He will lose his position as CEO, and you will go back to the slums where you belong."
Panic seized my chest. If they exposed the contract publicly, the scandal would destroy Giovanni’s reputation and tank his company's stock. He would lose the empire he had spent his life building. And it would be because of me.
I stood up, my mind racing. "Don't do this. I'll leave. If you keep this quiet, I will pack my bags tonight and walk away. Just don't ruin him."
"Too late," Carmela hissed triumphantly.
Suddenly, a heavy, commanding silence fell over the ballroom. The string quartet stopped playing. I turned toward the stage. Giovanni was standing at the podium, the microphone in his hand. He had seen them cornering me.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Giovanni’s voice echoed through the massive hall, confident and unwavering. He wasn't looking at the crowd; he was looking directly at me. "Before we continue the auction, there is a rumor I need to address. A rumor started by those who wish to see my family fractured."
Isabella smirked, stepping forward, ready to strike.
"It is true," Giovanni announced, his voice dropping into a tone of profound, raw honesty, "that my marriage to Jessica began as an arrangement. I was a man trapped by tradition, desperate to avoid a merger with a corrupt family. I offered her a contract to save myself."
The ballroom erupted in shocked gasps. Isabella and Carmela looked victorious, assuming Giovanni had just handed them the dagger to end his own reign.
"But," Giovanni continued, his voice rising, cutting through the noise with absolute authority, "what started as a business transaction became the greatest blessing of my life. I brought a woman into my home to play a part, and instead, she taught me how to live. She showed me grace, resilience, and a love so pure it terrifies me. The contract was shredded three weeks ago."
My hands flew to my mouth, tears instantly spilling over my lashes.
Giovanni stepped down from the podium and walked through the crowd, never breaking eye contact with me. When he reached our table, he completely ignored the furious, defeated faces of Isabella and Carmela. He dropped to one knee, right there in the middle of the glittering ballroom, pulling a small, velvet box from his breast pocket.
"I forced you into a fake marriage, Jessica," Giovanni said softly, the microphone picking up his every word. "But tonight, I am asking you for a real one. No contracts. No expiration dates. Just you, me, and Lily, for the rest of my life. Will you marry me? For real this time?"
May you like
The tears fell freely now as I looked at the man who had turned my darkest hour into a fairy tale.
"Yes," I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck as the entire ballroom erupted into deafening applause. "Yes, yes, a million times yes."
