## Chapter 5: The High Stakes Gala

# The Glass Inheritance

Forty-eight hours later, the charges were dropped.

Julian’s lawyers had worked a miracle, or perhaps it was the fact that the 'missing' bracelet was miraculously found in Victoria’s own jewelry box—planted there by Julian’s loyal housekeeper who had seen enough of Victoria’s cruelty.

But the war wasn't over. Victoria had invited the entire city’s elite to the annual Blackwood Gala. She planned to publicly announce her divorce and paint Julian as a predator who preyed on the staff.

Emily stood in a small dressing room at the back of the ballroom. She wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform tonight. She was wearing a deep emerald silk gown that Julian had sent to her. It was the color of defiance.

“You don’t have to do this,” Leo said, standing by the door. “We can just leave. Go back to the coast.”

“No,” Emily said, looking at her reflection. She looked like a stranger—someone powerful. “She tried to ruin my life to protect a lie. It’s time the truth had a turn.”

She walked out into the ballroom. The air was thick with the scent of lilies and the hum of a hundred elite voices. At the far end, on a small stage, Victoria stood with a microphone, looking like a queen.

“Thank you all for coming,” Victoria’s voice boomed. “Tonight is about transitions. Some of you may have heard rumors about my husband and a certain… domestic employee.”

A hush fell over the room. Julian was standing near the stage, his face expressionless.

“I want to set the record straight,” Victoria continued, a smirk playing on her lips. “Julian has always had a weakness for those less fortunate. But when charity turns into betrayal…”

“Let’s talk about betrayal, Victoria.”

Emily’s voice wasn't loud, but in the sudden silence, it rang like a bell. She walked down the center aisle, the emerald silk flowing behind her. All eyes turned. The 'maid' was here. And she wasn't hiding.
