Chapter 3 - The Truth Chloe Would Not Trade Away

Chloe wanted to run.
Not from Dominic.
Not from the Castille residence.
From all of it.
The gun.
The lies.
The police.
The Moretti family.
Her mother’s hospital room.
Every choice seemed to lead toward a different danger.
“I did not see anything,” she said. “I do not know who killed Vincent.”
“I know,” Dominic replied.
“Then tell Marco that.”
“He will not believe me.”
“Then let me talk to him.”
Dominic’s expression became sharp.
“No.”
“You said I get choices.”
“I said you get choices about your life. I will not let you walk into a meeting with Marco Moretti.”
“You cannot stop me.”
“I can.”
The words landed heavily.
Chloe stepped closer.
“And there it is.”
Dominic went still.
“You say I can choose,” she continued, “but the moment I choose something you do not like, you become exactly like every other powerful man who thinks protection gives him ownership.”
Dante looked toward the floor.
Sofia, standing near the doorway, remained silent.
Dominic’s face changed.
Not with anger.
With recognition.
“You are right,” he said quietly.
Chloe did not expect that.
“But Marco is not someone you can reason with,” Dominic continued. “He is not looking for truth. He is looking for a person to blame.”
“Then what do we do?”
Dominic walked to the table and placed another photograph beside Marco’s image.
It showed Detective Rayburn speaking with Marco in a private parking garage.
Chloe stared at it.
“Rayburn is working with him?”
“Not officially,” Dominic said. “But he has been feeding Marco information.”
“Why?”
“Because Rayburn believes Marco will do things the police cannot.”
The room went silent.
Chloe understood.
Rayburn was not trying to solve a murder.
He was trying to force Dominic into a mistake.
And Chloe was the easiest pressure point.
“Did you kill Vincent?” she asked.
Dominic looked at her.
The question hung between them.
“No,” he said.
Chloe searched his face.
“Will you tell Maya that?”
“Yes.”
“Will you tell the police that?”
“Yes.”
“Will you let me tell them what happened in Suite 412?”
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
The answer surprised everyone.
Even Dante.
Dominic continued.
“But we do it with your attorney present, with the media aware you are giving a statement, and with evidence of Rayburn’s connection to Marco secured first.”
Chloe looked at Maya, who had returned quietly to the doorway.
Maya nodded.
“That is the safest option,” she said. “If the police know people are watching, they have less room to manipulate the story.”
For the next two days, Chloe did not become Dominic’s captive or his lover.
She became a witness with legal protection.
Maya coordinated with federal investigators.
Dante provided security footage from the hotel.
Dominic gave investigators the parking-garage photograph of Rayburn and Marco.
And Chloe gave a full statement.
She told the truth about entering the wrong suite.
She told the truth about Dominic threatening her with a weapon.
She told the truth about lying because she feared what would happen if she refused.
She did not protect Dominic from the consequences of his choices.
And Dominic did not ask her to.
Detective Rayburn was suspended pending an internal corruption investigation.
Marco Moretti disappeared before officers could question him.
But the hospital visitor footage, the threats against Chloe’s mother, and the new evidence connected Marco to Vincent’s death more clearly than it connected Dominic.
Vincent had been killed over a financial dispute inside the Moretti organization.
Dominic had been near the hotel stairwell because he had been meeting an informant who warned him about Marco’s plan.
He had lied because he believed the police would never believe the truth.
In the end, the truth was messier than Chloe expected.
Dominic was not innocent.
He was not harmless.
He had made his living in a world Chloe wanted no part of.
May you like
But he had not killed Vincent Moretti.
And he had not let her become collateral once he understood what he had done to her.
