Chapter 4 - The Life Chloe Chose

Three months later, Chloe stood outside Northwestern Memorial Hospital with her mother.
Helen’s treatment plan had changed.
Not because Dominic paid for it without permission.
Because a legal medical-assistance foundation, recommended by Maya and approved by Helen herself, had helped cover the gap insurance would not.
Chloe had accepted the help only after reading every document.
Every term.
Every condition.
There were none.
Her mother squeezed her hand.
“You look different,” Helen said.
“I feel different.”
“Are you happy?”
Chloe looked across the street.
A black car waited near the curb.
Dominic stood beside it alone.
No Dante.
No armed men visible.
No pressure.
He had kept his distance after Chloe gave her statement. He sent no flowers. He made no demands. He did not ask her to forgive him.
He only sent one message every week.
Are you safe?
For the first month, Chloe never replied.
Then one day, she wrote:
Yes.
After that, their conversations became careful, slow, and honest.
He told her when he could not answer a question.
She told him when he frightened her.
He did not like it.
But he listened.
“I do not know if I am happy,” Chloe said to her mother. “But I know I am no longer pretending everything is fine when it is not.”
Helen looked toward Dominic.
“And him?”
Chloe took a breath.
“He is not my savior.”
“Good.”
“He is not my owner.”
“Better.”
“He is someone trying to become better than the man he was when I woke up in that hotel room.”
Her mother studied her.
“And do you want to be part of that?”
Chloe looked down at her own hand.
Then back at Dominic.
“I want to decide one day at a time.”
Dominic saw her approaching.
He did not move toward her.
He waited.
That mattered.
Chloe stopped several feet away.
“I have rules,” she said.
His mouth curved slightly.
“I assumed you would.”
“No lies.”
“Agreed.”
“No threats.”
“Agreed.”
“No decisions about my life without asking.”
“Agreed.”
“And no guns in bedrooms.”
For the first time, Dominic laughed.
It was quiet, brief, and almost disbelieving.
“Absolutely agreed.”
Chloe nodded.
Then she looked at the city stretching around them.
Her innocent mistake had changed everything.
It had placed her in a dangerous suite, before a dangerous man, inside a world she never wanted to enter.
But it also forced her to see something she had forgotten while working herself into exhaustion and drowning beneath her mother’s medical debt.
She had choices.
Not easy choices.
Not safe choices.
May you like
But choices.
And this time, nobody else would make them for her.
