Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Leverage

The Harbor Club was empty save for the waitstaff and a few old money Bostonians reading newspapers by the windows. Nia sat in a high-backed leather booth, sipping sparkling water. She wore a tailored black suit, her hair pulled back sharply. She looked every inch the ruthless corporate strategist she had once been.

Marcus arrived sweating despite the chill in the air. He slid into the booth across from her, his eyes darting nervously around the room.

"Nia, what is this about?" Marcus whispered. "If Adrian finds out we're meeting off the books to discuss the proxy shares—"

"Adrian is not going to find out, Marcus," Nia interrupted, her voice steady and commanding. "Because if he does, I will personally hand him the audit files showing the two million you diverted from the waterfront project last year."

Marcus went entirely pale. The breath hitched in his throat. "You said you deleted those files."

"I lied," Nia said smoothly. "But I am offering you a way out. A permanent one."

She pulled a thick manila folder from her briefcase and slid it across the table. "Cole Meridian Holdings is currently moving to acquire a majority stake in the Boston Commercial Bank. It’s the final step Adrian needs to completely wash his capital. The board vote is on Friday. As the CFO, you control the proxy votes for the minority shareholders. I need you to transfer signing authority for those proxies to a holding company I have just established."

Marcus stared at the folder as if it were a bomb. "You want to hijack the merger? Nia, he will kill me. He will kill us both."

"He won't have the resources to kill anyone by Friday night," Nia said coldly. "Once I control the proxies, I will trigger a poison pill clause in the corporate bylaws, freezing all of Meridian's liquid assets pending a federal audit. Simultaneously, a data packet containing the routing numbers for Adrian's illicit offshore accounts will be anonymously delivered to the FBI field office."

"Why are you doing this?" Marcus asked, his hands trembling.

"That is none of your concern," Nia replied. "You transfer the proxies, and the moment the freeze hits, I will wire you enough money to disappear to a country without an extradition treaty. If you refuse, Adrian gets the embezzlement audit tonight."

Marcus looked at the woman sitting across from him. He had always thought of Nia as Adrian's soft, elegant wife, a civilian kept safely away from the blood and the dirt. Now, looking into her flat, merciless eyes, he realized she was infinitely more dangerous than her husband.

Marcus picked up the pen and signed the proxy transfer.

Nia took the folder back, slipping it into her briefcase. "Pack your bags, Marcus. You have three days."

Leaving the club, Nia felt a strange, cold calm settle over her. The trap was set. She spent the rest of the afternoon at a private clinic under the name 'Sarah Jenkins', paying in cash to establish a prenatal care plan that Adrian’s vast network of doctors and spies would never trace. As she listened to the rapid, steady heartbeat of her child on the monitor for the second time, she made a silent promise to the screen.

I am building you a fortress out of his ruins.
