Chapter 4 - The Strike at the Core

Friday evening arrived with the suffocating pressure of an approaching storm. The Cole Meridian board meeting was being held in the penthouse conference room of their downtown headquarters. Adrian stood at the head of the long mahogany table, radiating triumph. He was wearing his signature charcoal suit, looking every bit the untouchable titan of industry. Tonight, the bank merger would pass, and his criminal empire would be permanently shielded behind federal banking protections.
Nia sat quietly in the back of the room, playing the supportive, invisible wife. She wore a simple navy dress, her hands folded neatly in her lap.
"Gentlemen," Adrian addressed the board, his charismatic smile in full force. "Tonight marks the beginning of a new era for Cole Meridian. With the acquisition of Boston Commercial Bank, we secure our legacy. Marcus, if you would present the proxy tallies for the final vote."
Adrian looked toward the CFO’s chair.
It was empty.
A ripple of confusion moved through the board members. Adrian’s smile faltered slightly, his eyes hardening as he scanned the room. "Where is Marcus?"
"Marcus is no longer with the company," Nia said.
Her voice was not loud, but it cut through the room like a scalpel. Every head turned toward her. Adrian stared at her, genuine bewilderment masking the sudden spike of danger in his posture.
"Nia, what are you talking about?" Adrian asked, his tone attempting to remain light, though a warning edge bled through. "This is a closed board meeting."
Nia stood up slowly. She walked toward the front of the room, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. She bypassed Adrian entirely and approached the digital projection screen.
"As of two hours ago," Nia announced to the room, ignoring her husband, "the holding company I represent, Vanguard Strategies, assumed total control of the minority proxy shares for Cole Meridian." She pulled a remote from her purse and clicked it. The screen flashed, displaying the legally binding transfer documents, signed and notarized.
"Furthermore," Nia continued, the absolute authority in her voice pinning the executives to their seats, "acting as the majority proxy, I am exercising my right to veto the Boston Commercial Bank merger. In addition, I have filed an emergency injunction freezing all of Cole Meridian’s capital assets due to suspected gross financial irregularities."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Men in expensive suits began shouting. Adrian stood frozen, the color draining from his face as the magnitude of what was happening slammed into him. The legitimate shield he had spent years building was being vaporized in real-time.
"Nia," Adrian hissed, stepping toward her, the mask completely gone, replaced by the terrifying violence of the mafia boss. "What have you done?"
"I am dismantling you," Nia said quietly, her voice only for him. "By the way, the FBI field office just received a very detailed encrypted drive regarding the Thomas Vance transition. They should be arriving at your subsidiary warehouses in about twenty minutes."
Adrian’s breath stopped. The mention of Thomas Vance was the kill shot. He looked at the woman he thought he owned, the woman he thought was blind, dependent, and broken. He saw the cold, architectural ruin in her eyes and realized he was looking at his executioner.

"You're dead," Adrian whispered, the threat raw and desperate.
"No, Adrian," Nia replied, turning her back on him and walking toward the double doors. "I'm just leaving."
