Chapter 18 - The Ambush at the Met GalaThere is a distinct difference between legal defense and a public execution. In a courtroom, a corrupt politician can hide behind his expensive lawyers and procedural delays. But in front of the press and the global elite, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was a masterpiece of Egyptian artifacts, soaring glass ceilings, and sheer, intoxicating wealth.
It was the most exclusive gala of the year, an event packed with A-list celebrities, international diplomats, and the most powerful CEOs on the East Coast.
I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. I did not look like a desperate mother being extorted. I looked like an apex predator preparing for a slaughter. Noah walked beside me in a flawless bespoke tuxedo. He wasn't acting as my security tonight; he was acting as my king. But I knew that scattered throughout the ballroom, disguised as valets and waiters, were thirty undercover federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security—agents loyal to a contact Noah had made during his immunity deals.
At exactly 9:00 PM, Senator Sterling Vance walked through the heavy mahogany doors.
He wore a tailored silver suit, flanked by his private security. He looked utterly triumphant, believing he had broken the woman who controlled the city’s fashion and freight.
I met him in the center of the Temple of Dendur exhibit. The ambient noise of the gala faded as the surrounding elite noticed the tension radiating between us.
“Lyra,” Vance purred, his voice carrying a sickeningly sweet tone. “What a beautiful party. You look remarkably composed for a woman whose empire is about to change hands.”
“Let's skip the pleasantries, Senator,” I said, my voice echoing with a calm, lethal authority. “You came for my shipping lanes.”
“I came for what is mine,” he corrected, his eyes flashing. He motioned to his lawyer, who stepped forward with a thick, leather-bound contract. “Sign the transfer documents, Lyra. Give me the clearance codes to your European fleet, and the fabricated documents concerning your husband will disappear forever.”
“You want me to transfer our highest-security maritime protocols to your private holding company?” I asked, my voice rising slightly so the nearby guests—and the undercover agents—could hear.
“That is the deal,” Vance smiled, holding out a gold fountain pen. “Sign the paper, or your son’s nursery will be empty by midnight.”
I took the pen. I looked down at the contract. Then, I looked up at him, offering a slow, devastatingly polite smile.
I dropped the pen onto the pristine marble floor. It clattered sharply, silencing the entire room.
“I am not giving you my company, Senator,” I stated, my voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel. “In fact, I just initiated a hostile takeover of your primary offshore accounts. As we speak, my forensic accountants are routing the entirety of your European liquidity directly into a federal holding account.”
Vance’s smug smile shattered. “What are you talking about? You can't touch those accounts!”
“I can when they are directly tied to an international human trafficking syndicate,” I replied, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by his armed guards. “You thought you could use a fake document to scare me. But you forgot that I balance the books for a living. I traced your cargo, Vance. You are a trafficker wearing a suit.”
“You are lying!” Vance shrieked, his aristocratic composure completely disintegrating. He turned to his guards. “Grab her!”
His guards reached into their jackets. They didn't even clear leather.
“Federal agents! Drop your weapons!”
The classical music violently cut out. The undercover agents surged from the crowd, weapons drawn, swarming Vance’s guards and slamming them to the marble floor.
The gala erupted into screams and gasps, but I did not move an inch. Noah stood right beside me, an impenetrable wall of strength, watching the chaos with cold satisfaction.
The lead Homeland Security agent marched up to Vance, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs.
“Sterling Vance,” the agent boomed. “You are under arrest for international human trafficking, money laundering, and extortion. You have the right to remain silent.”
Vance stared at me, genuine, unadulterated terror flooding his eyes as the cold steel clicked around his wrists.

“You ruined me!” he hissed, his voice trembling with hatred as they dragged him away. “You are nothing but a mobster's wife!”
“No, Senator,” I said, my voice perfectly level, carrying across the stunned ballroom. “I am the empress. And you just lost your head.”
