Chapter 23 - The Ambush at the LouvreThere is a distinct difference between corporate defense and a public slaughter. In a boardroom, a corrupt aristocrat can hide behind his lawyers. But in front of the global press, the truth belongs to whoever holds the heaviest ammunition.

The grand ballroom of the Louvre in Paris was a masterpiece of classical art, soaring glass pyramids, and sheer, intoxicating wealth.

It was the opening gala of Paris Fashion Week, an event packed with international diplomats, A-list celebrities, and the most powerful CEOs in Europe.

I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. I did not look like a woman who had been extorted. I looked like an empress preparing for an execution. Noah walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo. He wasn't acting as my security tonight; he was acting as my equal. But I knew that scattered throughout the ballroom, disguised as valets and waiters, were thirty undercover agents from Interpol.

At exactly 9:00 PM, Julian Croft walked through the heavy mahogany doors.

He wore a bespoke silver suit. He looked utterly triumphant, believing he had broken the woman who controlled the city’s fashion and freight.

I met him in the center of the ballroom, right beneath the massive central chandelier. The ambient noise of the gala faded as the surrounding elite noticed the tension radiating between us.

“Lyra,” Croft purred, his voice carrying a sickeningly sweet tone. “You look remarkably composed for a woman whose life's work is about to change hands. I assume you are ready to sign?”

“Let's skip the pleasantries, Julian,” I said, my voice echoing with a calm, lethal authority. “You came for my shipping lanes.”

“I came for what is mine,” he corrected, his eyes flashing. He motioned to his corporate lawyer, who stepped forward with a thick, leather-bound contract. “Sign the transfer documents, Mrs. Moretti. Give me the exclusive rights to your fleet, and the European supply chain will reopen tomorrow morning.”

“You want me to transfer the highest-security maritime protocols to your holding company?” I asked, my voice rising slightly so the nearby guests—and the undercover agents—could hear.

“That is the deal,” Croft smiled, holding out a gold fountain pen.

I took the pen. I looked down at the contract. Then, I looked up at him, offering a slow, devastatingly polite smile.

I dropped the pen onto the pristine marble floor. It clattered sharply, silencing the entire room.

“I am not giving you my company, Julian,” I stated, my voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel. “In fact, I just initiated a hostile takeover of your primary offshore accounts. As we speak, my forensic accountants are routing the entirety of your European liquidity directly into a federal holding account.”

Croft’s smug smile shattered. “What are you talking about? You can't touch those accounts!”

“I can when they are directly tied to sanctioned weapons syndicates,” I replied, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by his armed guards. “You thought you could use a supply chain blockade to scare me. But you forgot that I balance the books for a living. I traced your money, Croft. You are laundering billions in blood money.”

“You are lying!” Croft shrieked, his aristocratic composure completely disintegrating. He turned to his guards. “Grab her!”

His guards reached into their jackets. They didn't even clear leather.

“Interpol! Drop your weapons!”

The classical music violently cut out. The undercover agents surged from the crowd, weapons drawn, swarming Croft’s guards and slamming them to the marble floor.

The gala erupted into screams and gasps, but I did not move an inch. Noah stood right beside me, an impenetrable wall of strength, watching the chaos with cold satisfaction.

The lead Interpol agent marched up to Croft, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs.

“Julian Croft,” the agent boomed. “You are under arrest for international money laundering, racketeering, and extortion.”

Croft stared at me, genuine, unadulterated terror flooding his eyes as the cold steel clicked around his wrists.

“You ruined me!” he hissed, his voice trembling with hatred as they dragged him away. “You are nothing but a tailor!”

“No, Julian,” I said softly, my voice perfectly level, carrying across the stunned ballroom. “I am the empress. And you just lost your head.”
