Chapter 18 - The Ambush at the Summit

The Waldorf Astoria grand ballroom was a masterpiece of crystal, gold, and sheer, intoxicating wealth.
It was the annual Manhattan Philanthropic Summit, an event packed with senators, A-list celebrities, and the most powerful CEOs on the East Coast.
I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. I did not look like a woman about to lose her empire. I looked like an apex predator preparing for an execution.
Marcus walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo. He wasn't acting as my security tonight; he was acting as my partner. But I knew that scattered throughout the ballroom, disguised as valets and waiters, were thirty undercover federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security.
At exactly 9:00 PM, Alistair Croft walked through the heavy mahogany doors.
He wore a bespoke silver suit, flanked by his two massive guards. He looked utterly triumphant, believing he had broken the woman who had ruined his greatest asset.
I met him in the center of the ballroom, right beneath the massive central chandelier. The ambient noise of the gala faded as the surrounding elite noticed the tension radiating between us.
"Claire," Alistair purred, his voice carrying a sickeningly sweet tone. "What a beautiful party. It is almost a shame you won't be hosting it next year."
"Let's skip the pleasantries, Alistair," I said, my voice echoing with a calm, lethal authority. "You came for my company."
"I came for what is mine," he corrected, his eyes flashing. He motioned to his lawyer, who stepped forward with a thick, leather-bound contract. "Sign the transfer documents, Claire. Give me fifty-one percent of the Ashford Center, and the fabricated documents concerning Marcus will disappear forever."
"You want me to transfer the controlling shares to your European holding company?" I asked, my voice rising slightly so the nearby guests—and the undercover agents—could hear.
"That is the deal," Alistair smiled, holding out a gold fountain pen. "Sign the paper."
I took the pen. I looked down at the contract. Then, I looked up at him, offering a slow, devastatingly polite smile.
"I have a counter-offer," I said softly.
I dropped the pen onto the floor. It clattered sharply against the marble.
"I am not giving you my company, Alistair," I stated, my voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel. "In fact, I just initiated a hostile takeover of your primary offshore accounts. As we speak, my forensic accountants are routing the entirety of your European liquidity directly into a federal holding account."
Alistair’s smug smile shattered. "What are you talking about? You can't touch those accounts!"
"I can when they are directly tied to sanctioned arms syndicates," I replied, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by his armed guards. "You thought you could use a fake document to scare me. But you forgot that I balance the books for a living. I traced your money, Alistair. You are laundering billions in blood money."
"You are lying!" Alistair shrieked, his aristocratic composure completely disintegrating. He turned to his guards. "Grab her!"
Her guards reached into their jackets. They didn't even clear leather.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"
The music violently cut out. The undercover agents surged from the crowd, weapons drawn, swarming Alistair’s guards and slamming them to the marble floor.
The ballroom erupted into screams and gasps, but I did not move an inch. Marcus stood right beside me, an impenetrable wall of strength, watching the chaos with cold satisfaction.
The lead Homeland Security agent marched up to Alistair, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs.
"Alistair Croft," the agent boomed. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, treason, and funding sanctioned organizations. You have the right to remain silent."
Alistair stared at me, genuine, unadulterated terror flooding his eyes as the cold steel clicked around his wrists.
"You ruined me," he hissed, his voice trembling with hatred as they dragged him away. "You are nothing but a suburban housewife!"
May you like
"No, Alistair," I said, my voice perfectly level, carrying across the stunned ballroom. "I am the ocean. And you just drowned."
