Chapter 3 - Blood on the Water

Pier Three was a sprawling, desolate labyrinth of rusted steel shipping containers, looming dock cranes, and flickering, amber sodium lights that cast long, menacing shadows across the wet concrete. The rain was falling in blinding sheets, turning the nearby ocean into a churning, violent expanse of black water. The wind howled through the narrow corridors between the metal boxes, masking the sound of approaching footsteps.

Gianni Ferrara stood near the edge of the docks, shivering in a designer trench coat that was entirely unsuited for the weather. He was young, handsome, and dangerously naive. Flanked by only two low-level Ferrara enforcers, he was impatiently checking his gold watch, waiting for a maritime shipment of high-grade European rifles that the Cranes had promised to deliver.

He didn't notice the shadows moving above him. He didn't see the six heavily armed Crane hitmen, dressed in dark tactical gear, creeping silently along the tops of the shipping containers, their suppressed automatic weapons tracking his every movement.

Matteo parked the sedan three blocks away, cutting the headlights. He moved through the driving rain like a ghost, slipping through a gap in the chain-link perimeter fence. The years of polished boardroom meetings had never dulled his fundamental instincts. He knew how to hunt.

He moved silently between the towering stacks of containers, the heavy rain washing away the sound of his footsteps. He spotted the tactical strike team just as they were getting into position. They were forming a kill box. Gianni was standing dead center, completely exposed, complaining to one of his men about the cold.

Matteo didn't shout a warning. A warning would only cause Gianni to panic and run directly into the line of fire.

Instead, Matteo stepped out from the deep shadow of a container directly behind the Crane team's point man. With ruthless, cold-blooded precision, Matteo raised his customized 1911 pistol and fired twice. The suppressed weapon let out a sharp, metallic cough. The point man dropped instantly, tumbling off the edge of the container and crashing heavily onto the concrete below.

The sound of the falling body shattered the illusion of the ambush. Gianni jumped back, drawing his weapon, wild confusion painting his face.

The remaining five Crane hitmen spun around, desperately trying to locate the source of the attack, but the shadows and the driving rain betrayed them. Matteo moved with terrifying, fluid speed. He was a force of nature, a violent correction to the betrayal they had attempted. He fired three more times, dropping two more men before they could even raise their rifles.

Gunfire finally erupted, the loud, unsuppressed roar of Crane rifles tearing through the night, but they were firing blindly into the dark. Sparks showered the wet concrete as bullets ricocheted off the steel containers.

"Gianni! Get down!" Matteo roared, his voice cutting through the chaos like thunder.

Gianni dropped behind a stack of wooden pallets just as the space he had been occupying was shredded by automatic fire. Matteo didn't take cover. He advanced. He moved with a cold, terrifying inevitability, using the tight, narrow corridors between the containers to isolate the remaining shooters. He flanked a man trying to reload, putting a single bullet through his temple.

The last Crane hitman panicked. Realizing his squad had been decimated by a single, unseen ghost in the rain, he threw down his rifle and sprinted toward the perimeter fence.

Matteo stepped out into the amber light, his white shirt soaked with rain and blood, his eyes dead and empty. He raised his weapon, took a single breath to steady his racing heart, and squeezed the trigger. The fleeing man's leg buckled violently as the bullet shattered his kneecap. He collapsed into the muddy gravel, screaming in agony.

The silence that followed was heavy and profound, broken only by the sound of the storm and the groans of the wounded man.

Gianni slowly stood up from behind the shattered pallets, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the carnage surrounding him. He looked at the bodies, recognizing the tactical gear of the Crane family. And then, he looked at his older brother, standing amidst the slaughter like a dark, avenging angel.

"Matteo?" Gianni gasped, his voice cracking with shock. "What... what the hell is this? Where is the shipment?"

"There is no shipment, you idiot," Matteo said coldly, walking over to the wounded Crane hitman and kicking the man's discarded weapon into the harbor. "It was a setup. Our uncle sold us out to Isabelle's father. They were going to slaughter you and use your body to justify a hostile takeover of the entire Ferrara syndicate."

Gianni swallowed hard, all the color draining from his face as the reality of his own mortality crashed into him. "The wedding..."

"Is officially cancelled," Matteo stated, his voice a low, lethal rumble. He grabbed the wounded Crane operative by the collar of his tactical vest, dragging him across the wet concrete. "Bring the car around, Gianni. We are going back to the safehouse. And then, we are going to start a war."
