Chapter 5 - The Widower’s War

The morning of what was supposed to be the most lavish mafia wedding of the decade dawned cold, gray, and unforgiving. The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was empty, the expensive floral centerpieces wilting, the perfectly arranged tables sitting entirely abandoned. The three hundred dangerous guests who were supposed to attend had all received the exact same encrypted message at 6:00 a.m.
It was a mass email containing a single audio file, extracted from the steganographic image Sera had secured. It was the unedited, undeniable recording of Isabelle’s father and Matteo’s uncle casually discussing the logistics of assassinating Matteo at the rehearsal dinner.
The criminal underworld of the city did not erupt into a chaotic war; it froze in absolute, terrified shock. Matteo had bypassed the street soldiers and gone straight to the Commission. He had provided irrefutable proof of a treacherous, unprovoked assassination plot, completely isolating the Crane family from all their allies. No one backed a traitor whose plans had been so spectacularly exposed.
At noon, Isabelle Crane stood in the center of her father's sprawling estate, screaming at her security detail as they frantically packed bags. Her father was already gone, having fled on a private jet the moment the audio file leaked. She had spent a year pretending to love a man she intended to bury, and now, she was the one running for her life.
The heavy, ornate front doors of the Crane estate suddenly blew inward with a deafening crash, ripped off their hinges by a military-grade breaching charge.
Isabelle shrieked as smoke and dust filled the grand foyer. Through the haze, Matteo Ferrara walked in, flanked by Raf, Gianni, and a dozen heavily armed, fiercely loyal enforcers. Matteo was wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression a mask of cold, terrifying calm.
"Matteo!" Isabelle cried out, trying to arrange her face into a mask of innocent horror. "Matteo, please! I didn't know! My father acted alone, I swear it! I loved you!"
Matteo didn't even break his stride. He walked straight up to her, his slate-gray eyes entirely devoid of mercy, devoid of the hesitation he had shown for the past year.
"The wedding is cancelled, Isabelle," Matteo said, his voice echoing in the ruined foyer. "And your family's tenure in this city is permanently terminated. Your ports belong to the Ferrara syndicate. Your distribution lines belong to the Ferrara syndicate. If you are still within the city limits by sundown, you will belong to the river."
Isabelle stared at him, the arrogant, calculating woman completely broken by the absolute, crushing realization that she had lost everything. She turned and fled up the stairs, sobbing hysterically.
Matteo turned on his heel and walked out of the estate, leaving his men to secure the newly acquired assets. He climbed into the back of the waiting armored SUV.
Sera was sitting in the rear passenger seat, looking significantly better. The color had returned to her cheeks, the fever was gone, and she was wearing a sharp, tailored dark coat. She had a tablet resting on her lap, already running the logistics of absorbing the massive Crane distribution network.
"The offshore accounts are secured," Sera reported without looking up, her voice dry, efficient, and wonderfully familiar. "The Commission has officially sanctioned the takeover. We own the eastern seaboard, Matteo."
Matteo looked at her, a true, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. The chalk warnings, the fake smiles, the quiet bloodshed—it was all over. He reached across the leather seat, gently taking the tablet from her hands and setting it aside.
"The books can wait, Sera," Matteo said softly, taking her hand in his, intertwining their fingers. "The hostile takeover is complete."

Sera looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a brilliant, undeniable fire. She didn't pull her hand away. She squeezed his fingers tightly, leaning in to rest her head against his shoulder as the heavy vehicle pulled away from the ruined Crane estate.
"Good," she murmured, a satisfied smile touching her lips. "Now, let's go build an empire."
