Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the ER

Ethan’s grip was like iron, his knuckles white as he dragged me an inch closer. The trembling in his hands was completely gone, replaced by a terrifying, lethal stillness.
"What did you just say?" he repeated, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper that seemed to suck all the air out of the massive library.
My heart hammered violently against my ribs, but the memory of that night was too sharp to ignore. I didn't pull away.
"I was a third-year nursing student at Dallas General three years ago," I breathed, forcing myself to hold his intense, burning gaze. "I was on rotation in the trauma bay when the ambulances arrived from the highway pileup. The news—and the official hospital reports—stated that your wife and daughter died on impact."
Ethan’s jaw locked. A muscle ticked in his cheek. "They did."
"No, Mr. Carter. They didn't," I said softly. "Your wife didn't make it. But your daughter... I was the one who cut the jacket off her. She was unconscious, but she had a pulse. She was breathing. And then, before we could even intubate, the Chief of Surgery ordered the room cleared and personally transferred her to a private wing."
Ethan froze. The silence in the room became absolute, suffocating.
"The next morning," I continued, my voice shaking now with the weight of the secret, "the Chief of Surgery abruptly resigned. And the hospital administrator who signed the immediate transfer authorization was a woman named Evelyn Herrera."

Ethan didn't blink. He slowly let go of my wrist and stood up.
In that single moment, the broken, grieving ghost of a man vanished entirely. The apex predator of the Dallas financial underworld—the ruthless billionaire who crushed his enemies without a second thought—resurrected right in front of my eyes.
