Chapter 3 - The Inside Job

"Mrs. Herrera," Ethan murmured, his voice laced with a cold, demonic rage. "The woman who came to me three days after the crash, highly recommended by my late wife's brother, offering to manage my estate so I could mourn in peace."
He walked over to his heavy oak desk, completely ignoring the expensive watch and open wallet he had left out to test my honesty. He didn't care about a petty thief. He cared that he had been sleeping under the same roof as the monster who had helped steal his child.
He opened a drawer and pulled out a sleek black handgun, racking the slide with a deafening clack.
"Mr. Carter—" I started, stepping back.
"Do exactly as I say, Elena," Ethan commanded, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying brilliance. "Go to the front hall. Lock the main doors. Do not let my security detail inside. I pay them, but Mrs. Herrera hired them."
I didn't hesitate. I turned and ran.
I locked the massive mahogany doors just as I heard the sharp, frantic clicking of Mrs. Herrera's heels coming down the marble staircase. She stopped halfway down, her severe face twisting in confusion as she looked from the locked doors to me.
"What are you doing, Elena?" she snapped. "Unlock those doors instantly."

"She isn't taking orders from you anymore, Evelyn," a voice echoed through the foyer.
Ethan stepped out of the library shadows. The gun in his hand was pointed directly at Mrs. Herrera's chest.
