Chapter 3: The King’s Decree

In the distance, the wailing sound of police sirens began to cut through the storm. Alejandro’s lawyers had worked fast.
Vivian realized her empire of lies had completely collapsed. She stood up, kicking off her diamond-studded heels, preparing to run for the front doors.
"Don't take another step," Alejandro said. His loyal personal guards—the men who traveled with him—instantly drew their weapons and blocked the heavy mahogany doors.
"You can't do this to me!" Vivian screamed, her elegant facade entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, frantic monster. "I built your public image while you were mourning! I brought you the Moretti corporate merger! She is weak, Alejandro! I would have given you the world!"
"I already own the world," Alejandro replied with ice in his veins. "And I am going to use every single cent of it to ensure you never see the sun again."
The grand doors burst open, and heavily armed police officers flooded the entrance hall. They grabbed Vivian, forcing her hands behind her back and locking the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Alejandro!" Vivian shrieked as she was dragged out into the pouring rain, the flashing red and blue lights illuminating her tear-streaked, ruined face. "You haven't seen the last of me! The board members knew! They all knew!"
Her screams faded as the police cruisers sped away down the long driveway.
The mansion finally fell quiet. The heavy, suffocating darkness that had haunted the estate for three years seemed to lift.

Alejandro turned his back to the doors. He bent down, effortlessly lifting his daughter into his arms, and extended his hand to his wife. Elena looked at his hand, then up into his eyes—the same loving eyes she had fallen in love with years ago. She took it tightly.
"Come," Alejandro whispered gently, kissing his wife's forehead and resting his cheek against his daughter's hair. "Let's go home."
