Chapter 4: The Viper in the House

Sarah didn't tell David immediately. If she was wrong, it would destroy their family forever. If she was right, telling David without proof might trigger a violent confrontation that could put Leo in danger again. She needed evidence.

For the next three days, Sarah played the part of the exhausted, relieved mother. But at night, while David slept, she became a ghost in her own home. She remembered that Arthur had briefly lived in their guest house three years ago, right around the time his real estate firm was facing bankruptcy—a bankruptcy David had refused to bail him out of.

She broke into Arthur’s old files stored in the basement archives. She dug through years of financial records. And then, she found it. A hidden ledger showing massive, untraceable offshore payments to a private property in rural Illinois—a property Arthur never officially declared.

She hired a private investigator to check the property. The call came at midnight on a Sunday.

"Mrs. Sterling," the investigator said over the encrypted line. "The property is an abandoned hunting cabin. It's heavily fortified from the inside out. There are locks on the outside of the basement door. And there’s a child's mattress on the floor."

Sarah’s vision blurred with pure, unadulterated rage. Arthur had kidnapped his own nephew. He had likely intended to ransom him to save his failing business, but when the police involvement grew too massive, he panicked and kept the boy locked away, feeding him lies about his parents abandoning him to keep him compliant.

Before Sarah could call Detective Miller, the floorboards behind her creaked.

She spun around. Arthur stood in the doorway of her home office. The security system hadn't chimed. He still had a key.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Sarah," Arthur sighed, reaching into his tailored jacket. He pulled out a sleek, suppressed handgun. "I saw the investigator poking around my property today. I knew it was only a matter of time."

"You monster," Sarah hissed, stepping subtly toward the heavy brass lamp on her desk. "He is your blood. He was a baby."

"He was leverage," Arthur corrected coldly. "David owed me. I built that company with him, and he let me drown. I was going to give Leo back once the ransom was paid, but David involved the FBI too fast. I was stuck with him. And then the little rat managed to break the basement window last week."

Arthur raised the gun. "I can't let him talk, Sarah. And I can't let you talk."

"David!" Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing the heavy brass lamp and hurling it directly at Arthur’s head.

The lamp struck Arthur’s shoulder just as he pulled the trigger. The suppressed shot shattered the glass window behind Sarah. Arthur stumbled, swearing, and aimed again.

Suddenly, the office door flew open. David, having woken up to the scream, tackled his brother with the primal, feral rage of a father protecting his pack. The gun skittered across the floor. David pinned Arthur to the mahogany desk, delivering a sickening punch to his brother’s jaw that knocked him instantly unconscious.

Sirens wailed in the distance. Sarah had hit the silent panic button under her desk the moment Arthur walked in. It was over.
