Chapter 5: The Light After the Long Dark
A year is a long time when you are walking out of the dark.
Arthur’s trial was swift and merciless. The evidence Sarah uncovered, combined with the physical proof at the cabin and Leo’s eventual testimony, sealed his fate. He was sentenced to life in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
The media circus eventually died down, leaving the Sterling family to do the hard work of rebuilding.
It was a bright, crisp Saturday in late spring. The backyard of the Sterling estate was bathed in golden sunlight. The smell of barbecue floated through the air.
Sarah sat on the patio, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the scene unfold before her.
Mia was running across the lush green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy they had adopted a few months prior. And chasing right behind her, laughing loudly, was Leo.
He had grown. The malnutrition was a thing of the past. His cheeks were full, his eyes were bright, and the haunted, terrifying shadows that used to plague his every waking moment were slowly fading away. He still had hard days, days where the trauma flared up, but he knew he was safe. He knew he was loved.
David stood at the grill, flipping burgers. He looked over his shoulder, catching Sarah’s eye. He smiled—a genuine, unburdened smile that made him look ten years younger.
Leo stopped running, out of breath, and scooped up the wriggling puppy. He walked over to the patio and sat right next to Sarah. He didn't flinch when she reached out to smooth his messy hair.
"Are you having fun, sweetheart?" Sarah asked softly.
Leo looked up at her, his blue eyes clear and bright. He leaned into her touch, resting his head against her arm.
"Yeah," Leo smiled, a beautiful, brilliant expression of pure childhood joy. "I really am, Mom."

Sarah closed her eyes, letting the warmth of the sun and the reality of her son's voice wash over her. They had walked through hell, fought the demons in the shadows, and reclaimed their stolen life.
The alley was a lifetime away. They were finally home.
