Chapter 3 - The Pulse of the TruthThe examination room was dimly lit, dominated by a massive, high-definition ultrasound monitor mounted on the wall. I lay back on the crinkling paper of the examination table, pulling my dress up to expose my abdomen.

Sarah, a warm, highly experienced ultrasound technician, offered me a sympathetic smile, clearly sensing the suffocating, toxic tension radiating from the three people looming near the doorway. Julian leaned against the wall, checking his expensive silver watch with an exaggerated sigh of boredom. Victoria stood with her arms crossed, her lips pursed in absolute disgust.

"Alright, Mrs. Kensington, this gel is going to be a little cold," Sarah whispered, applying the clear liquid and pressing the wand firmly against my skin.

Almost instantly, the room was filled with a sound that brought hot, immediate tears to my eyes.

Whoosh-whoosh-whoosh-whoosh.

It was the rapid, powerful, undeniable rhythm of a tiny heartbeat. After three years of empty tests and silent monitors, the sound of life echoing through the speakers felt like a religious experience. My breath hitched in my throat. I looked at the screen, seeing the small, flickering shape in the gray static.

"Fascinating," Julian sneered from the doorway, completely unaffected by the sound of the heartbeat. "Let’s skip the sentimental part. What is the exact gestational age? Just give us the date so my lawyer can check it against my travel calendar."

Sarah didn't answer him. Her eyes were locked entirely on the monitor. She clicked her mouse with rapid, precise movements, taking digital measurements of the tiny spine, the skull, the developing limbs.

Slowly, the polite, comforting smile vanished completely from Sarah’s face. Her brow furrowed in intense concentration. She zoomed in on the center of the tiny mass, her hand freezing on the wand. The room went entirely dead silent, save for the rapid, echoing heartbeat.

"Is something wrong?" I asked, my voice cracking with sudden, overwhelming terror. I tried to sit up. "Sarah, please, is the baby okay?"

"I... I need to page Dr. Evans immediately," Sarah whispered, her voice tight. She didn't look at me. She hastily grabbed the wall phone, punching in a code with a trembling finger.

Victoria let out a loud, mocking bark of laughter. "What is it? Did she conceive it yesterday? Is the timeline so absurd you need a doctor to verify it?"

"Shut your mouth, Victoria," I snapped, sitting up on my elbows, my heart hammering against my ribs.

A moment later, Dr. Evans, the clinic’s chief maternal-fetal specialist, hurried into the room. She didn't bother with introductions. She stepped directly up to the monitor, her eyes scanning the frozen image on the screen. She studied it for a long, agonizing minute.

Then, she slowly, deliberately turned to look at Julian.
