Chapter 5 - The Empire ReclaimedJulian began to sweat. Massive, terrified beads of perspiration broke out across his forehead. He looked wildly at Preston. The aggressive lawyer was no longer looking at me with contempt; he was furiously shoving the settlement papers back into his briefcase, his face red with fury as he realized his own client had lied to him and walked them blindly into a catastrophic legal trap.

Our prenuptial agreement, which Julian had insisted upon to protect his growing brokerage assets, contained a very specific, ironclad defamation and infidelity clause. If Julian initiated a divorce based on demonstrably false allegations, or if he was found to be cohabitating with another woman while legally married, he forfeited his entire claim to the marital estate, the primary residence, and a significant portion of his stock portfolios.
"Claire... Claire, wait," Julian stammered. His hands were shaking visibly as he reached out toward me. The arrogant, untouchable titan of finance was instantly reduced to a panicked, cornered coward begging for mercy. "I made a mistake. I was stressed from the procedure. Sloane meant nothing, I swear to God it was just a lapse in judgment. We can fix this. We're having a baby."
"The only thing we are fixing is the balance of your bank accounts," I replied, sitting up and accepting a towel from Sarah to wipe the gel from my stomach. I pulled my dress down, stepped off the examination table, and looked him dead in the eye.
"My lawyer, Harper, will be filing an amended petition this afternoon," I stated, my voice echoing with absolute finality. "I am taking the house. I am taking the investment portfolios you built while I supported you. And I am suing you in civil court for public defamation, citing the exact emails and social media posts you used to drag my name through the mud."
Julian fell to his knees in the sterile clinic room. He literally collapsed, weeping, begging me not to ruin him.
I turned my attention to Victoria, who was staring at the frozen image of her grandchild on the monitor in stunned, horrified silence. The aristocratic matriarch was entirely broken.

"And you can keep his luxury suits in those black trash bags, Victoria," I said, stepping past her toward the door. "Because he is going to need them when he's moving into a studio apartment."
I walked out of the clinic with my head held high, the sound of my baby's strong, miraculous heartbeat still echoing in my ears, leaving the man who tried to destroy me suffocating in the sterile, terrifying reality of his own absolute ruin.
