Chapter 1 - The Center of the Room

The string quartet was playing a slow, sweeping waltz, but as Giovanni Campone led me toward the center of the marble dance floor, the music seemed to fade into a dull, distant hum. The only sound that mattered was the collective, breathless silence of four hundred of the city’s most elite, vicious socialites watching the impossible unfold.

If anyone wishes to understand the absolute, seismic shift in power that occurred in that ballroom, they only need to look at the file 6_2.jpg. It captures the devastating contrast of my reality. In the top frame, the camera catches the exact moment of my daily humiliation—Celeste, radiating cruel, vindictive joy in her glittering gown, pointing and laughing at me while I stand with my arms crossed, trying to make myself as small and invisible as possible in my borrowed gray dress. But the bottom frame is the reckoning. It is the moment Giovanni Campone stepped out of the shadows. His face is a mask of lethal, protective fury as he physically pulls me away from them, holding my hand with an iron grip, while Celeste and the rest of the onlookers stare in absolute, paralyzed horror.

He didn't just ask me to dance; he dragged me out of my own personal purgatory and placed me under his absolute protection.

Giovanni pulled me into his arms. His right hand rested firmly on my lower back, his left hand clasping mine. He moved with the fluid, commanding grace of a man who dictated the terms of every room he entered.

"You are shaking, Willow," he murmured, his voice a low, dark velvet that sent a shiver down my spine that had nothing to do with fear.

"I have never been the center of attention, Mr. Campone," I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the lapel of his tailored black suit, too overwhelmed to meet his gaze.

"Giovanni," he corrected smoothly. He applied a gentle pressure to my lower back, forcing me to look up at him. His eyes were dark, piercing, and entirely focused on me. "And you should get used to it. Women who possess your quiet strength belong in the center of the room. Not hiding in the shadows of lesser people."

I glanced over his shoulder. Patricia and Celeste were standing exactly where we had left them. Celeste looked as though she was struggling to breathe, her face flushed with a toxic, consuming jealousy. Patricia was furiously whispering to a passing waiter, her carefully constructed composure entirely shattered.

"Why did you do this?" I asked, looking back at Giovanni. "You don't know me. You just made me a target for the rest of my life."

"I know exactly who you are, Willow Hayes," Giovanni said, effortlessly spinning us across the polished marble. "I know your father, Marcus, was one of the few honest men in this city's real estate sector. I know he died two years ago. And I know that within three months of his death, his grieving widow and her daughter somehow assumed total control of a forty-million-dollar estate, leaving his biological daughter with nothing but a struggling coffee shop in the garment district."

My breath hitched. "How do you know about the coffee shop?"

Giovanni smiled, a sharp, dangerous expression that made the urban legends about him entirely believable. "Because, Willow, it is my job to know where the money in this city moves. And I despise thieves who think they are clever."
