Chapter 2 - The Syndicate's Ledger

The dance ended, but the evening did not. Giovanni did not return me to the edge of the room, nor did he allow Patricia or Celeste to approach. Instead, he led me directly out of the ballroom, through a set of heavy mahogany doors, and into a private VIP lounge heavily guarded by his men. Mateo, his right-hand man, stood by the door, nodding respectfully as I passed.

Giovanni poured two glasses of expensive bourbon and handed one to me.

"Drink," he instructed gently. "You need the warmth."

I took a small sip, the liquid burning a necessary path down my throat. I sat on the edge of a leather sofa, clutching the crystal glass, trying to process the absolute whiplash of the last thirty minutes.

"Patricia's lawyers found loopholes in my father's will," I said softly, staring at the amber liquid. "My father was sick for a long time. They claimed he signed a secondary trust document giving Patricia full executive control over the assets to 'protect' the estate. I fought it, but I didn't have the capital to sustain a legal war against the firm she hired."

"They didn't find loopholes, Willow," Giovanni said, sitting in the armchair opposite me. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his presence dominating the quiet room. "They committed fraud. Aggressive, sloppy fraud."

I looked up, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What are you talking about?"

"Your stepmother hired a boutique wealth management firm to facilitate the transfer of your father's commercial deeds into her private shell company," Giovanni explained, his voice turning cold and precise. "What Patricia did not realize is that the wealth management firm she used is a subsidiary front. It is owned and operated by my syndicate. She used my infrastructure to steal your inheritance."

The room seemed to tilt. Patricia, in her arrogant, blind greed, had accidentally intertwined her financial crimes with the Italian Mafia.

"I had my forensic accountants pull the files the moment Mateo told me who you were on the dance floor," Giovanni continued, reaching inside his jacket. He pulled out a sleek, black USB drive and set it on the glass table between us. "The secondary trust document your father supposedly signed? The signature was digitally forged, timestamped three days after he was placed in a medically induced coma. My servers have the original, unedited timestamp data. This drive contains the absolute, indisputable proof of her forgery, wire fraud, and embezzlement."

I stared at the small black drive. It was the key to my cage. It was everything I had prayed for during the last two years of washing dishes at the coffee shop just to keep the lights on, while Celeste flaunted my father's wealth.

"Why are you giving this to me?" I asked, my voice trembling. "You could use this to blackmail her. To take the estate for yourself."

May you like

Giovanni stood up, walking over to the sofa. He reached down, his warm hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear I hadn't realized had fallen.

"Because, Willow," he said softly, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that took my breath away. "I have enough money. What I want is to watch a queen reclaim her throne. I want you to take this drive, walk into the light, and burn their stolen kingdom to the ground."
