Chapter 7: The Predators' Gala

The Winter Gala at the Grand Heritage Hotel was a glittering, suffocating assembly of Chicago’s true elite—politicians, billionaires, and syndicate bosses wearing the polished masks of legitimate businessmen. The grand ballroom was awash in the light of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and the toxic whispers of high-society paranoia.
When the massive oak doors swung open, the entire ballroom fell into a sudden, breathless silence.
Victor Russo walked in, radiating a violent, absolute authority that naturally parted the crowd. But the eyes of the city’s elite weren't fixed on the notorious syndicate boss. They were completely captivated by the woman walking beside him.
Elara wore a custom, breathtaking ruby-red velvet gown with a daring thigh-high slit. Her dark hair was swept over one shoulder in perfect, cascading waves, highlighting the flawless diamond choker—a priceless Russo heirloom—resting against her collarbones. She didn't cling to Victor’s arm like a frightened accessory. She walked perfectly in sync with him, her head held high, her gaze sweeping over the crowd with the absolute, chilling confidence of a conquering monarch.
Across the room, Leo Donati stood near the champagne fountain with his daughter, Isabella. The glass in Leo's hand trembled violently as he saw Elara. Isabella, the woman who had sneered at Elara and demanded she scrub the penthouse floors just a month prior, turned a sickly shade of pale, her eyes burning with jealous rage.
"How did a maid get past security?" Isabella hissed to her father.
Victor and Elara didn't avoid them. They walked in a perfectly straight line directly toward the Donati family. The surrounding billionaires scattered, terrified of being caught in the crossfire of a Russo vendetta.
"Victor," Leo Donati growled as they approached, desperately trying to maintain his crumbling facade of power. "You brought the hired help to a black-tie event? It seems the standards of the Russo family have severely deteriorated."
Victor didn't even look at Leo. He stood there like an immovable fortress of dark energy, silently handing the stage over to the woman he worshipped.
Elara took a single step forward. She looked at Leo Donati with a gaze so devoid of mercy it could freeze the sun.
"Our standards haven't deteriorated, Mr. Donati. In fact, we just drastically upgraded our acquisitions department. I am not the hired help. I am the Chief Financial Officer of the Russo Syndicate. And I came over here to offer my condolences."
"Condolences?" Leo frowned, his face turning a mottled red. "What the hell are you babbling about, you little—"
"About the margin call from Zurich at 6:00 PM tonight," Elara interrupted smoothly, plucking a flute of champagne from a passing waiter. "I hear the banks froze your casino assets because you defaulted on your two-hundred-million-dollar loan."
Leo Donati looked as if he had been physically shot. "How... how could you possibly know that? That call was highly classified!"
"Because I am the one who provided the banks with your risk assessment portfolio, Leo," Elara smiled, a sweet, venomous curve of her lips. "And I am also the proxy who just purchased your South Port operations for ten cents on the dollar. You are officially bankrupt, Leo. As of this exact second, every shipment that moves through Chicago pays a tax to Victor Russo. If they don't, you don't get a single crate off those docks."
Isabella shrieked, lunging forward. "You lying bitch! You're nothing but a—"
Before Isabella could finish her sentence, Victor stepped forward. He didn't raise his hand, but the sheer, explosive violence rolling off his broad shoulders made Isabella physically recoil in sheer terror.
"She is my partner. She is my life," Victor whispered, his voice a low, echoing rumble that chilled the blood of everyone within a twenty-foot radius. "If you, or your father, ever speak a single disrespectful word to Elara again, I won't just buy your assets. I will burn them to the ground with you trapped inside. Now get out of my sight before I have security throw you onto the street like the trash you are."
Leo Donati staggered backward, clutching his chest. The destruction of a century-old mafia empire had been orchestrated entirely by a woman in a red dress. He grabbed his weeping daughter by the arm and fled the ballroom, utterly humiliated in front of the entire city.

Elara turned to Victor, lightly tapping her champagne flute against his glass. "Mission accomplished, Mr. Russo."
Victor looked at her, his steel-gray eyes burning with a dark, consuming hunger. "You are an absolute masterpiece, Elara."
