Chapter 17 - The Architecture of VengeanceWhen a predator threatens your sanctuary, you do not lock the doors and hide in the dark. You put on your armor, you find their supply lines, and you sever them completely.

By midnight, our Manhattan penthouse had been transformed into a militarized war room.

Vincent had called in his most elite financial analysts, led by Silas, and a team of cybersecurity contractors. The massive marble dining table was buried under blueprints, tax records, and encrypted laptops. I sat at the head of the table, an empty espresso cup beside me, my eyes burning as I scanned the documents Thorne had left behind.

"He forged the narcotics link flawlessly," Silas said grimly, pacing behind my chair. He looked dangerous—a lethal shadow pacing a cage. "If Thorne hands this to the federal tribunal on Friday, the ensuing investigation will paralyze the Mercer Foundation globally. Our funding will plummet. The board will panic and force a liquidation of the clinics."

"That is exactly his play," I agreed, leaning back and rubbing my temples. "He wants to starve us out. He knows he can't crack Vincent's legitimate businesses, so he is using the DEA as a battering ram against the charity."

"I can end this tonight," Vincent whispered, stopping beside me. His dark eyes were swirling with a fierce, protective fury. "I still have men who know how to make a Senator disappear. I can erase him before the sun comes up."

"No," I said softly, but with absolute conviction. "If we play his game with blood, we become exactly what the world thinks we are. We become mobsters. I didn't build an empire of healing just to run back into the dark the second I get scared."

Vincent let out a ragged breath, resting his forehead against mine. "He threatened our legacy, Hannah. He threatened you."

"I know," I breathed, my eyes hardening into diamonds. "Which is why I am going to annihilate him legally, publicly, and permanently. I want you to pull every single offshore record tied to Senator Thorne’s political action committees. We are going to find his vulnerability."

For the next forty-eight hours, we barely slept. We traced shell companies through Switzerland, the Caymans, and London. Thorne was brilliant, but arrogance always leaves a footprint.

At 3:00 AM on Thursday, Elias—who had stayed to help run the physical surveillance metadata—let out a sharp gasp.

"Got him," Elias announced, his voice vibrating with adrenaline.

I was by his side in a second. Elias pointed to a cascading series of micro-transactions on his monitor.

"Thorne claims his PAC operates on legitimate corporate donations," Elias explained, typing furiously to decrypt the final layer of the ledger. "But these routing numbers... they trace back to a sovereign wealth fund sanctioned by the United States government for international opioid trafficking and extortion."

I stared at the screen, the sheer magnitude of the discovery hitting me.

"He isn't just a corrupt politician," I whispered. "He’s laundering cartel money. He isn't looking for our warehouses to store generic drugs. He is using his Senate badge to run a synthetic opioid ring right through the heart of New York."

"And Thorne is operating his front company on American soil," Vincent smiled, a cold, terrifying expression. "If the federal government finds out, they won't just freeze his assets. They will lock him in a federal black site for racketeering and treason."

"Do we call our contacts at the FBI?" Silas asked, reaching for his phone.

"Not yet," I said, standing up, smoothing my clothes. "If we just hand this over, he’ll tie it up in court for a decade with his expensive lawyers while my clinics remain frozen by the DEA. We need to catch him in the act. Call Thorne. Tell him I am surrendering the deeds to the warehouses. Tell him to meet me tomorrow night at the Global Tech & Philanthropy Gala."
