Chapter 7 - The Breach at the GatesWhen you invite light into a dark room, the shadows do not simply disappear—they recede to the corners, waiting for the sun to set.

For three weeks, Vincent kept his promise. He took Hannah on quiet, beautiful dates. He attended Sophie’s school play, sitting in the back row with Elias, watching the little girl beam when she spotted him. He was terrifying to the city, but to Hannah and Sophie, he was a shield.

But Victor Romano was a man whose ego outweighed his intellect. He did not heed Vincent’s warning. He saw Vincent’s new attachment not as a boundary to be respected, but as a vulnerability to be exploited.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Vincent was in his midtown office, finalizing the acquisition of a legitimate shipping firm, when his encrypted cell phone rang. It was an emergency override line.

"Boss," Elias’s voice cracked over the line. The sound of screeching tires and blaring horns echoed in the background.

Vincent stood up instantly, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor. "Report."

"We have a situation at Sophie’s elementary school," Elias said, his breathing heavy. "Two unmarked black SUVs attempted to breach the student pick-up line. Four of Romano’s men tried to grab the girl when the teacher brought her outside."

The air completely vanished from Vincent’s lungs. A primal, catastrophic rage erupted in his chest. "Where is she?!"

"She is safe," Elias confirmed immediately, the fierce loyalty in his voice undeniable. "I had a four-man perimeter team stationed in the shadows, just like you ordered. We intercepted them before they got within fifty feet of her. We put two of Romano's men in the hospital and captured the other two. Hannah is with Sophie now in the principal’s office. They are locked down."

"I am on my way," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a freezing, lethal pitch. "No police. Secure the perimeter. No one leaves that building."

When Vincent’s armored town car violently pulled up to the school fifteen minutes later, he didn't walk through the front doors. He marched through them like a god of war. Parents and teachers physically backed away from the sheer, terrifying aura of violence radiating from him.

He kicked open the door to the principal’s office.

Hannah was sitting on a small sofa, her arms wrapped fiercely around Sophie, her face pale with shock. When Sophie saw him, she broke away from her mother and ran directly toward him.

"Vincent!" the little girl cried, burying her face into his expensive wool coat.

Vincent dropped to one knee, wrapping his massive arms around the tiny child, completely shielding her from the world. He closed his eyes, inhaling the scent of lavender and rain, uttering a silent, violent vow to the universe.

He stood up, carrying Sophie in one arm, and looked at Hannah. The pediatric nurse was trembling, the reality of his world finally crashing through the protective glass he had tried to build around her.

"Hannah," Vincent said softly. "I am taking you out of here. You are coming to my estate."

She didn't argue. She didn't scream. She looked at the man who had just saved her child’s life, and she nodded.

Vincent turned to Elias, who was standing guard at the door. The protective father vanished, replaced entirely by the Kingpin of New York.

"Take them to the safe house," Vincent commanded, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. "Lock down the estate. And Elias? Call the captains. Tell them to arm every man we have. We are going to war."
