Chapter 14 - The Dead Man's Hand

"We’ll see about that," Marcus sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "My men are already tracing the signal from that clever little earpiece you're wearing. It’s only a matter of time."

I froze in the command center. He was tracing the comms. I frantically typed a rerouting sequence, bouncing our signal through a dozen proxy servers across Europe to scramble the origin, but my eyes remained glued to the live feed. Emily was staring down the barrel of a loaded gun, and she looked completely bored.

"You're not going to shoot me, Marcus," Emily said casually, taking a step toward him, the silk of her crimson dress whispering against the floor. "Because if my heart stops beating, the dead man’s switch I initiated when I walked into this room triggers automatically. It doesn't just freeze your funds. It emails the unredacted GPS coordinates of your cartel partners’ processing facilities directly to the DEA, the CIA, and the New York Times."

Marcus’s confident facade cracked for a microsecond. "You're bluffing."

"Shoot me and find out," Emily challenged, her voice dripping with absolute venom. "You underestimated me two years ago when your son was beating me black and blue. You thought I was just a naive, pretty little thing who would quietly disappear. You forgot that I was the one running your entire firm’s forensic audits. I know where every single cent of your blood money is buried. I own you, Marcus."

Marcus’s jaw tightened. The gun wavered just a fraction of an inch. That hesitation was the only opening Emily needed.

With blinding speed, she didn't dive for cover. She ripped the diamond choker off her neck and whipped it directly into Marcus’s face. The heavy jewels slashed across his eye, blinding him momentarily. As he stumbled backward, roaring in pain, his pistol fired blindly into the ceiling.

Emily closed the distance in a heartbeat. She drove the stiletto heel of her shoe violently into his kneecap with a sickening crack. Marcus collapsed to the floor, dropping the gun.

"Mom, I need the override code for the panic room, now!" Emily shouted, ignoring Marcus as she sprinted to the bookshelf, yanking the hollowed-out encyclopedia off the shelf.

"Four-seven-niner-alpha-bravo!" I yelled into the mic.

Emily punched the code into the hidden keypad. The heavy bookcase hissed, swinging open to reveal a sterile, concrete panic room lined with the blinking red lights of the air-gapped servers.

She rushed inside, pulling a specialized hard drive from her clutch. She jammed it directly into the primary terminal.

"Execute the payload, Mom!" she screamed.

On the barge, I slammed my hand down on the ENTER key.

The screens in front of me erupted into a chaotic blizzard of data. The Trojan horse unleashed a localized, devastating worm into Caldwell’s secure network. I watched in awe as the progress bars for the two-hundred-million-dollar cartel transfer instantly halted, turned crimson red, and abruptly reversed.

"Transfer interrupted," I read the prompts aloud, my voice shaking with adrenaline. "Initiating ghost protocol. Funds are re-routing. Liquidating assets. Marcus’s private accounts are draining!"

In the library, Marcus was dragging himself across the floor, his face covered in blood, trying to reach his fallen pistol. "You stupid bitch!" he screamed, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "You don't know who that money belongs to! The cartel will flay you alive!"

"No, Marcus," Emily said, stepping out of the panic room and kicking his gun out of reach. She looked down at him with absolute disgust. "They’re going to flay you alive. Look at the screen."

Marcus looked up at the massive monitor in his library. The funds weren't going into Emily’s accounts. They were being dispersed into thousands of micro-transactions, flooding the bank accounts of domestic violence shelters, legal aid funds, and anonymous charitable trusts across the globe.

"The money is gone," Emily whispered, crouching down so she was eye-level with the architect of her nightmares. "And in exactly thirty seconds, the Chicago Police, the FBI, and your cartel investors are going to receive an automated dossier detailing exactly how you robbed them."

Sirens began to wail in the distance, a faint, high-pitched scream cutting through the night air. The estate's security alarms began to blare, bathing the library in a frantic, strobing red light.

"It's over, Marcus. Burn in hell," Emily said. She turned her back on him, slipping out the massive French doors of the library and vanishing into the rainy night just as the first police cruisers breached the front gates.
