Chapter 3: The Guest of Honor

# The Price of Silence

##

The following morning, the Sterling mansion was buzzing. Beatrice was hosting a charity brunch for the city’s elite. It was her favorite way to flex her power. Emily was expected to play the part of the dutiful, silent daughter-in-law, hiding her bruises under heavy foundation and a silk scarf.

In the kitchen, Chloe was acting like she already owned the place. She was barking orders at the caterers, her arm linked through Mark’s as if they were the hosts.

“Oh, Emily,” Chloe sneered as Emily entered the room. “I see you managed to cover up your… clumsiness. Did you bring the papers?”

“I have them,” Emily said calmly. She held a manila envelope tightly.

Beatrice walked over, her eyes scanning Emily like a hawk. “Give them to Mark. Then go to the garden. You are to speak to no one. If anyone asks about your face, you fell in the library. Am I understood?”

“Perfectly,” Emily said. She handed the envelope to Mark.

Mark smirked, tucking the envelope into his jacket pocket. “See? I knew you’d see reason. We’ll talk about your ‘allowance’ later.”

As the guests began to arrive—senators, CEOs, and socialites—Emily moved through the crowd like a shadow. She wasn't headed for the garden. She was headed for the library, the nerve center of the house’s integrated media system.

Beatrice took her place at the top of the grand staircase to make her opening remarks. “Thank you all for coming. The Sterling family has always believed in transparency and integrity…”

Emily, hidden in the library, plugged her laptop into the house’s main server. Her fingers flew across the keys. She bypassed the security blocks she herself had designed.

“Transparency,” Emily muttered, her finger hovering over the ‘Enter’ key. “Let’s give them some.”

She hit the button.

On the massive 100-inch screens in the ballroom and the garden, the promotional video of Sterling Tech’s charity work flickered and died. It was replaced by a grainy video feed from the dining room the night before.

High-definition audio filled the house. “She did what I should have done years ago,” Beatrice’s voice boomed.

The crowd gasped as the screen showed the moment Chloe slapped Emily, followed by Beatrice’s brutal strike. The socialites froze, champagne glasses halfway to their lips.

“What is this?” Beatrice shrieked from the stairs, her face turning pale. “Turn it off! Mark, turn it off!”

But Mark was staring at the screens in horror. The video transitioned. It wasn't just the assault anymore. It was a scrolling ledger of their embezzlement—the Cayman accounts, the fake invoices, and a recording of Chloe saying, “Once the merger hits, we’ll leave your mother with the debt and disappear.”
