Chapter 7: The Final Straw

# The Price of Silence
##

The trial of Mark Sterling and Chloe Vance became a national obsession. Emily sat in the front row of the courtroom every day. She didn't hide her face. She wanted them to see her.
Mark looked haggard in his orange jumpsuit, his once-perfect hair thinning and dull. Chloe looked even worse. Without her designer makeup and expensive styling, she looked small and bitter.
When it was Emily’s turn to testify, the room fell silent. She detailed the years of emotional abuse, the financial manipulation, and finally, the night of the assault.
“Did your husband attempt to stop the assault?” the prosecutor asked.
“No,” Emily said, her voice echoing through the chamber. “He watched. He told me I deserved it for being disrespectful to his mistress.”
Mark put his head in his hands. Chloe hissed something under her breath, earn her a sharp reprimand from the judge.
Then came the evidence of the theft. Emily’s forensic audit was bulletproof. She showed exactly how they had planned to ruin Beatrice and leave the country.
In a desperate move, Chloe’s lawyer tried to turn the tables. “Isn’t it true, Mrs. Thorne, that you engineered this entire ‘hack’ to seize control of the company? That you provoked your husband and his associate?”
Emily looked directly at the lawyer. “I didn’t have to engineer anything. I simply stopped hiding their own actions. If the truth ruins you, it’s not the truth’s fault. It’s yours.”
The jury reached a verdict in less than two hours.
Guilty on all counts.
As they were led away, Chloe lost her mind. She began screaming at Mark, blaming him, clawing at the guards. Mark just stared at Emily as the heavy doors of the holding cell began to close.
“Emily!” he yelled. “I’m sorry! I love you!”
Emily didn't blink. She turned her back on him and walked out into the sunlight.
Waiting for her on the courthouse steps was Beatrice. She looked like a shadow of her former self, wearing a cheap coat and a look of pure desperation.

“Emily,” Beatrice said, her voice trembling. “The bank is foreclosing on the house. I have nowhere to go. Surely, for the sake of the family name…”
“There is no Sterling family anymore, Beatrice,” Emily said. “There’s just a group of criminals and the woman who finally walked away. I’m turning the estate into a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse. You can apply for a bed there, if you like. But I hear there’s a waiting list.”
