Chapter 2: The Face Beneath the Grime

The rhythmic, precise snip, snip, snip of Julian’s scissors was the only sound in the dead-silent salon. The other stylists had stopped working. The wealthy clients in the waiting area lowered their magazines, watching the scene unfold in a mixture of horror and morbid fascination.

With every lock of matted, dirt-caked hair that fell to the pristine white floor, a startling transformation was taking place. Julian worked with the utmost respect and immense concentration. He guided the man to the shampoo bowl, using the most expensive clarifying treatments to wash away months of street grime. The water ran dark brown, then grey, and finally, crystal clear.

Vanessa angrily paced the floor near the reception desk, her phone pressed tightly to her ear. "Yes, I need security on the third floor immediately! My head barber has completely lost his mind and is harboring a vagrant! Bring handcuffs if you have to!" she yelled, ensuring everyone in the room heard her authority.

But back at the chair, as Julian tilted the chair back and began to carefully apply hot lather to the man's overgrown, unkempt beard, the murmurs in the salon began to shift. The straight razor glided smoothly over the man's skin, revealing sharp, aristocratic features that had been buried under tragedy and dirt.

A wealthy, older regular client sitting in the corner chair suddenly sat up perfectly straight, his jaw dropping open. The color completely drained from his face.

The man in Julian's chair wasn't just a random beggar. As the last of the shaving cream was wiped away, his piercing, intelligent steel-blue eyes and distinct, powerful jawline were finally recognizable.

The wealthy client stood up, his voice shaking. "Is that... dear God... Mr. Sterling?"

Vanessa stopped pacing. Her phone slipped slightly from her ear. She turned slowly, looking at the clean-shaven man in the chair, and suddenly, the terrifying reality crashed into her like a freight train. He was Arthur Sterling. The reclusive billionaire real estate mogul who owned the very plaza this salon leased.
