Chapter 2: A Test of Character

Chapter 2: A Test of Character
The next morning, the waitress received an unexpected phone call.
A black luxury sedan waited outside her small apartment.
Inside sat the same man who had fired her.
"I owe you an apology."
She remained standing.
"I didn't come for one."
He nodded.
"I know."
He handed her a sealed envelope.
Inside was a job offer.
Not as a waitress.
As Director of Guest Relations for every hotel his company owned.
She looked at him in disbelief.
"You barely know me."
"I know enough."
He slid a tablet across the seat.
It contained reports from every place she had ever worked.
Every manager had written nearly identical comments.
Honest.
Calm under pressure.
Always protects others before herself.
Never accepts special treatment.
He looked out the window.
"I built my company by trusting resumes."
Then he looked back at her.
"My mother reminded me that character tells the truth long before paperwork does."
She smiled politely.
"I'll accept."
"But on one condition."
He raised an eyebrow.
"No employee in your company should ever be punished before knowing the whole story."
After a long pause...

He extended his hand.
"You have my word."
