CHAPTER 6: THE REAL LEGACY

Robert, the attorney, asked me to come to his office on Friday morning. He poured two cups of coffee and slid a heavy, black leather binder across his mahogany desk.
"What is this?" I asked, looking at the gold lettering on the cover.
"The house and the personal accounts were just the distraction, kiddo," Robert smiled warmly. "Your father knew his wife and stepdaughter were greedy, but he also knew they weren't very smart. He let them focus on the cash so they wouldn't notice what he was actually building."
I opened the binder. My breath caught in my throat.
It wasn't a bank statement. It was a corporate charter. A massive, diversified real estate holding company. Commercial properties across three different states. An entire portfolio of untouched, heavily protected assets.
"He transferred ownership into an irrevocable blind trust five years ago," Robert explained. "Your mother couldn't touch it. Chloe didn't even know it existed. Your father named you the sole beneficiary and CEO, effective upon the conclusion of the criminal trials."
I stared at the paperwork. The net worth was staggering. It wasn't just money. It was an empire.
"He wanted to make sure you were strong enough to handle it," Robert said softly. "He needed to see if you could survive the vultures before he handed you the crown."
Tears blurred my vision. My father hadn't just protected me. He had armed me.

"So," Robert asked, leaning back in his chair. "Are you ready to go to work?"
I wiped my eyes, closed the binder, and sat up completely straight. "Tell the board of directors I'll be in on Monday."
