Chapter 4 - His Boss Chose Her

The official announcement began at nine o’clock.
Guests gathered before the stage as Graham Vale stepped to the podium.
Daniel stood near the front, but he could barely hear the opening remarks. His thoughts kept returning to Evelyn.
To the calm certainty in her eyes.
To the fact that she had not asked him a single question about his life.
To the way Graham treated her—not as a guest, not as someone beautiful on his arm, but as an equal.
“Tonight,” Graham said into the microphone, “we are announcing a new chapter for Argent Row Capital.”
The screens behind him displayed the company logo.
Then it faded.
A new name appeared.
THE HART-VALUE RESPONSIBLE HOSPITALITY INITIATIVE
The ballroom erupted in applause.
Daniel’s hands remained at his sides.
Graham continued.
“For too long, our industry has treated hotels and properties as numbers on a spreadsheet. But these businesses are communities. They employ people. They preserve neighborhoods. They carry family histories.”
Evelyn stepped onto the stage.
Her presence changed the room.
Daniel watched executives who once ignored her now lean forward to listen.
“Evelyn Hart has spent the past five years proving that ethical investment and strong returns are not opposites,” Graham said. “They are inseparable.”
The screen changed again.
A list of hotels Evelyn had helped save appeared behind her.
Then the number of jobs protected.
Then the number of community projects funded.
Then the names of organizations that had partnered with her.
Daniel had no idea how much she had accomplished.
He had assumed she was recovering.
She had been building.
Graham turned toward her.
“Effective immediately, Evelyn will serve as Executive Chair of the initiative. All hospitality acquisition teams will be subject to her review.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
All acquisition teams.
Including his.
After the applause ended, Graham added one final sentence.
“Ethical conduct will no longer be optional at Argent Row Capital.”
Daniel looked toward Marissa.
Her face was pale.
She understood what he understood.
The folder Evelyn took five years ago had never disappeared.

It had simply waited.
