Chapter 6 - Marissa Finally Learned the Truth

Marissa found the hidden account two days later.

Daniel had forgotten to log out of an old laptop. She was searching for an email about their mortgage when she discovered folders labeled with dates, property codes, and initials.

Inside were records of payments.

Not only to Victor Sloan.

To other women.

Different names.

Different cities.

Different years.

Some dated before Daniel met Marissa.

Some dated while he was still married to Evelyn.

Marissa sat alone in the darkened living room, staring at the screen.

For years, she believed she had won.

She believed Daniel left Evelyn because Marissa was younger, more exciting, more beautiful, more deserving of a man like him.

But she had never been the exception.

She had only been the next secret.

When Daniel came home, she placed the laptop on the dining table.

“What is this?” she asked.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face went blank.

“You should not have gone through my private things.”

Marissa laughed bitterly.

“Private things? Is that what you called me when you were married?”

Daniel moved toward her.

“Marissa, listen—”

“No. You listen.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You told me Evelyn was cold. You told me she stopped loving you. You told me you were trapped.”

“I was unhappy.”

“So you lied to everyone?”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You knew what this was.”

“No,” Marissa whispered. “I thought I did.”

She looked toward the window, where the city lights blurred through rain.

“I thought she was weak because she did not fight you.”

Daniel said nothing.

Marissa wiped her face.

“She was not weak. She was waiting until she did not need to fight at all.”

The next morning, Marissa called Argent Row’s legal department.

She asked for a lawyer.

And then she began telling the truth.
