Chapter 1 - The Departure and The Deal

The heavy door of the town car closed, severing the chaotic noise of the Grandon Hotel from the insulated, pin-drop silence of the leather interior. I sank back against the plush seats, my legs suddenly feeling like lead. The adrenaline that had fueled my grand performance in the ballroom was evaporating, leaving behind a cold, shaking reality. I had just declared war on my ex-boyfriend and my sister, using the most dangerous, powerful man in New York as my weapon.
And now, that weapon was sitting right next to me.

Nico Rossi didn't look like a man who had just publicly disowned his son and caused a high-society scandal. He looked entirely at ease. He reached over to the small, built-in mahogany bar and poured two glasses of amber liquid, handing one to me. As he moved, the streetlights passing by illuminated the intricate, dark tattoos that snaked down his forearms and across the backs of his hands—a stark, dangerous contrast to the pristine, tailored white dress shirt he wore, the top buttons casually undone.
"Drink," Nico commanded softly, his rich baritone wrapping around me in the confined space. "You're shaking, Luna."
I took the glass, my fingers brushing against the rough ink on his knuckles. The contact sent a jolt of electricity up my arm. "I'm not shaking because I'm scared," I lied, taking a sip of the bourbon. It burned on the way down, steadying my nerves. "I'm shaking because I can't believe that actually worked. Liam's face... he looked like his entire world had collapsed."

"It did," Nico stated matter-of-factly, leaning back and crossing one long leg over the other. His silver hair caught the dim light, framing a face that was brutally handsome and etched with lines of experience Liam couldn't even fathom. "My son has lived his entire life under the illusion that my empire is a safety net for his incompetence and his cruelty. Tonight, the net vanished."
I turned to look at him fully. The backless white silk gown I wore slid slightly against the leather seat. "You didn't have to go that far. Stripping his title, the trust... you didn't have to destroy him just to help me."
Nico’s dark, piercing eyes locked onto mine. "Do not mistake my actions for mere charity, tesoro. I do nothing I do not want to do. Liam’s betrayal of you was merely the catalyst I required. A man who lacks the honor to respect the woman in his own bed cannot be trusted to run a multibillion-dollar corporation. I protected my legacy. But more importantly..."
He reached out, his large, warm, heavily tattooed hand gently covering my bare knee. The touch was branding. "...I secured my own interests. I told you outside the hotel, Luna. I have watched you for six months. I am a patient man, but I am not a passive one."

My breath hitched. "Nico, I just walked in on my boyfriend and my sister. My life is a disaster right now. I don't even know where I'm sleeping tonight. My apartment is paid for by Liam's firm as a perk."
"You are sleeping at my penthouse," Nico said, leaving no room for argument. "Your things will be moved out of that apartment by my security team tomorrow morning. Liam will not have access to you. Amber will not have access to you. From this moment forward, you are under my protection."

"I don't want to be a kept woman," I fired back, my independence flaring despite the exhaustion. "I didn't do this to trade one Rossi for another."

A slow, devastating smile spread across Nico's face. "Good. Because I am not looking for a pet. I am looking for a partner. Someone with the fire to walk into a room full of wolves wearing white silk and demand exactly what she wants. Tonight, you sleep. Tomorrow, we build your new life. Together."
The car glided into the private underground parking of the city's most exclusive high-rise. As we stepped into the private elevator that required Nico's biometric scan, I realized I had crossed a threshold. The girl who cried on the floor over Liam was dead. The woman rising to the penthouse with Nico Rossi was entirely new, and she was terrified by how much she wanted the man standing beside her.
