Chapter 5 - The Empire's New Queen

Six months later.

The Grandon Hotel ballroom looked exactly the same as it had the night my life changed. The crystal chandeliers still sparkled overhead, and the champagne still flowed among New York's wealthiest families. But everything else was entirely different.

I wasn't wearing a revenge dress. I was wearing a stunning, custom-made emerald green gown that swept the floor, the color perfectly complementing the massive, flawless diamond resting on my left ring finger.

I stood near the stage, watching the crowd. The whispers that followed us now weren't about scandal or revenge. They were about power. Nico and I had become the undisputed king and queen of the New York financial elite. Liam had eventually quit the mailroom and moved to a small town in the Midwest, entirely cut off from the Rossi fortune. Amber had disappeared to the West Coast, a forgotten footnote.

The orchestra stopped playing, and Nico stepped up to the microphone on the stage. The entire ballroom fell into a hushed, respectful silence.

Nico looked out over the crowd, his commanding presence demanding absolute attention. He looked incredibly handsome, his silver hair catching the light, his dark suit tailored to perfection.

"Six months ago, in this very room, my life took a turn I did not anticipate," Nico's deep voice echoed through the speakers. "I stood here and made a decision that many of you whispered about behind closed doors. You called it a crisis. You called it a scandal."

He paused, his dark eyes scanning the room until they locked onto mine. The intensity of his gaze made my breath catch, just as it had the very first night.

"You were all wrong," Nico continued, his voice softening, meant only for me despite the hundreds of people listening. "It was not a scandal. It was an awakening. A man can build an empire, he can conquer industries, and he can amass fortunes. But an empire is nothing but cold stone without a queen to share the throne."

He stepped down from the stage, walking directly toward me, parting the crowd effortlessly just as he had done six months ago. But this time, I didn't need him to be a weapon against my past. I just needed him to be my future.

Nico stopped in front of me, taking my hand in his. His thumb brushed over the diamond engagement ring he had placed there two nights ago.

"Luna Vance walked into my life and burned down the house of cards I had allowed to stand for too long," Nico said, projecting his voice so the entire room could hear. "She brought loyalty, fire, and a strength that humbles me every single day. She is no longer just my partner in business or my shield against betrayal."

He lifted my hand, pressing a kiss to my knuckles, his eyes never leaving mine.

"She is my fiancée. The future Mrs. Rossi. And anyone who questions her place in this city will answer directly to me."

The ballroom erupted into applause, genuine and thunderous. The high-society vultures had finally realized that they weren't witnessing a scandal; they were witnessing a dynasty being forged in iron and fire.

Nico pulled me flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around me in front of the cheering crowd. "I told you, tesoro," he whispered in my ear, his voice rough with emotion. "You are the only thing worth looking at."

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down for a kiss that sealed the promise. I had walked into a nightmare six months ago, humiliated and broken. But by playing the most dangerous card in the deck, I hadn't just destroyed the people who hurt me. I had won the world.
