Chapter 14 - The Sovereign’s ExecutionTo completely destroy a man like Victor Thorne, you cannot just hand evidence to the police. You must execute him publicly, on his own stage, stripping him of the illusion of his absolute power in front of the entire world.

That evening, Victor Thorne was hosting the Vanguard Diamond Gala at the Boston Public Library. It was an ultra-exclusive, closed-door event for the city’s political and financial elite, designed to legitimize his shadow empire.

I did not sneak in. I arrived in a black Maybach.

I stepped out of the car wearing a backless, sweeping gown of liquid-gold sequins. I looked like armor. I looked like a queen coming to reclaim her throne.

I bypassed the red carpet and walked directly through the heavy brass doors of the library, flanked by four of my own heavily armed, elite private security contractors.

The grand reading room was transformed into a masterpiece of crystal and wealth. Thorne stood on the sweeping marble staircase, holding a glass of champagne, surrounded by senators and corrupt judges.

When he saw me, his confident, arrogant smile froze.

The ambient chatter of the gala died down instantly. The sea of billionaires parted as I walked straight toward the staircase.

"Claire," Thorne purred, recovering his composure, though his eyes darted nervously to my security detail. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to dress up for a surrender. Do you have the keys?"

"I don't have your keys, Victor," I said, my voice projecting clearly over the silent, echoing hall. "I have your funeral."

Thorne scoffed. "Arrest her. She is trespassing."

Two of his mercenaries stepped forward, but the heavy oak doors of the library suddenly burst open behind me.

"Nobody move! Federal agents!"

But these were not the corrupted agents who had taken Jack. This was the Director of the FBI’s Counter-Terrorism Division, flanked by heavily armed SWAT operatives.

Thorne’s face drained of every drop of color. "What is the meaning of this?"

"The meaning, Victor," I smiled, a slow, terrifying, predatory expression, "is that while you were busy trying to intimidate a mother, I hacked the Apex Logistics mainframe. I didn't just find the 1.5 billion dollars in cartel money. I found the wire transfers proving you funded the illegal arms syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe."

I pulled the glowing, encrypted tablet from my clutch and held it up for the entire room to see.

"At 6:00 P.M. tonight, I handed this unredacted ledger directly to the Director of Homeland Security," I announced, delivering the fatal blow. "Your domestic accounts are frozen. Your offshore shell companies are being raided by Interpol as we speak. And Special Agent Harrison, the corrupt dog you bought to arrest my partner, is currently sitting in an interrogation room singing like a canary in exchange for immunity."

Thorne stumbled backward on the marble stairs. The untouchable phantom billionaire was suddenly a man staring into the abyss of a federal supermax prison.

"You set me up," Thorne hissed, pure venom dripping from his lips.

"No, Victor," I whispered, stepping closer to the stairs so only he could hear the absolute ruin in my voice. "You set yourself up the moment you threatened my son."

"Take him," the FBI Director barked.

Federal agents swarmed the staircase, slamming Thorne against the marble railing and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. He didn't fight. He knew it was completely, undeniably over.

As they dragged the ruined billionaire out of the glittering gala, the silence in the room was absolute. The power brokers of the city stared at me in profound, unadulterated awe and terror.

I didn't gloat. I turned on my designer heels and walked out of the library, into the crisp, freezing night air.

Standing on the sidewalk, leaning against the hood of a sleek black SUV, was Jack.

He had been released from federal custody an hour ago. He wore a slightly rumpled suit, but his blue eyes shone with an intense, burning devotion that took my breath away.

I didn't walk. I ran.

I threw myself into his arms. Jack caught me effortlessly, spinning me around in the cold night air, burying his face in my neck, inhaling deeply.

May you like

"You did it, counselor," Jack murmured, his voice thick with emotion, pressing fierce, desperate kisses to my temple. "You burned the whole damn castle down."

"I told you, Jack," I smiled, tears of profound, unshakeable joy falling down my cheeks. "I’m not playing defense anymore."
