Chapter 9 - The House of CardsThe next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in controlled, absolute warfare.

Jack Hayes had moved his operations into the secure war room of my law firm. The glass walls were covered in digital schematics, offshore routing numbers, and wire transfer logs. Jack was brilliant. Armed with the name Daniel had provided, he didn't just crack Vivian’s firewall; he obliterated it.
"It’s worse than we thought," Jack said, his voice low and gritty, pointing to a massive flow chart on the smart-board. He hadn't slept, his sleeves rolled up, a dark shadow of stubble on his jaw. "Vivian isn't just the PR head for Marcus Montgomery. She’s his bagman. She’s been using Azure Holdings to funnel Marcus’s hidden marital assets into illegal, unregulated offshore crypto-tumblers. But here’s the kicker."
Jack tapped a specific red line on the screen.
"She’s skimming off the top," he revealed, a predatory smile touching his lips. "Vivian has been embezzling roughly fifteen percent of Marcus’s hidden money and routing it into her own private accounts in Switzerland. Over the last two years, she’s stolen nearly eight million dollars from the billionaire she works for."
I stared at the screen, a slow, chilling realization washing over me.
Vivian was a parasite who had gotten greedy. She was stealing from a sociopath. If Marcus found out she was skimming his blood money, he wouldn't fire her. He would end her.
"We have the wire transfers? The IP logins?" I asked, my heart pounding a steady, lethal rhythm.
"Bulletproof," Jack promised, his blue eyes locking onto mine with a fierce, unwavering intensity. "It’s enough to put her in a federal penitentiary for twenty years for wire fraud and money laundering. What’s the play?"
"We don't give it to the feds," I said softly, the strategy forming with flawless precision. "We give it to Marcus."
That evening, the annual Boston Winter Gala was being held at the Museum of Fine Arts. It was a glittering, exclusive event for the city’s elite, filled with politicians, CEOs, and the press. Marcus Montgomery, currently fighting a brutal public relations battle due to the divorce, was required to attend to maintain his facade of benevolent philanthropy. Vivian would be right by his side, managing the optics.
I did not go to hide. I went to execute an empire.
I arrived at the museum wearing a stunning, backless emerald-green gown that swept the marble floors. I looked like absolute, untouchable power. Jack walked beside me in a tailored black tuxedo, radiating a dangerous, quiet authority. His hand rested lightly on the small of my back, a solid, anchoring presence that made the air between us crackle with electric tension.
The grand hall was filled with classical music and the clinking of crystal champagne flutes.
I spotted them immediately. Marcus was holding court near a massive Renaissance painting, forcing a charming smile for a group of state senators. Vivian stood next to him in a silver dress, scanning the room like a hawk.
When Vivian saw me, her smile froze. She immediately whispered something to Marcus.
Marcus excused himself from the senators and walked purposefully toward me, Vivian trailing closely behind. His face was a mask of restrained, patrician fury.
"You have a lot of nerve showing your face here," Marcus hissed, keeping his voice low so the surrounding elite wouldn't hear. "I told you, I am not signing that extortionate settlement offer. I am taking Clara to trial, and I am going to ruin you both."
"Hello to you too, Marcus," I smiled, a polite, chilling expression. I took a delicate sip of my champagne. "I didn't come to discuss Clara’s settlement. I came to do you a favor."
"A favor?" Vivian scoffed, stepping forward, her eyes flashing with venom. "You are completely out of your depth. I told you what would happen if you pushed us. The press release about your son is already drafted. I’ll hit send before midnight."
Jack stepped forward smoothly, his towering frame instantly intimidating Vivian. "I wouldn't do that, Vivian. Cell service in here is terrible. And you’re going to need your battery for your lawyer."
I reached into my emerald clutch and pulled out a sleek, encrypted titanium tablet. I tapped the screen once and handed it directly to Marcus.
"What is this?" Marcus demanded, looking down at the glowing screen.
"That is a heavily encrypted digital dossier," I stated, my voice carrying the absolute, uncompromising weight of an executioner. "It contains the complete, unredacted ledger of Azure Holdings. It details exactly how you’ve been hiding your marital assets from the court."
Marcus’s face drained of color.
"But you already knew that," I continued smoothly, ignoring his panic. "What you didn't know, Marcus, is the second set of ledgers on that screen. Look closely at the outbound transfers."
Marcus swiped the screen. His eyes widened. The realization hit him like a physical blow. He slowly turned his head to look at Vivian. The charismatic billionaire vanished. In his place was a man staring at the woman who had just robbed him of eight million dollars.
"Marcus," Vivian whispered, her voice trembling violently, stepping backward. "Marcus, she fabricated that. It’s a lie! She’s trying to divide us!"
"The IP addresses match your personal laptop, Vivian," Jack noted coldly. "The Swiss accounts are registered in your mother's maiden name. It’s a flawless paper trail."
"You stole from me," Marcus breathed, his voice a terrifying, vibrating rumble. He grabbed Vivian by the arm, his grip so tight she whimpered in pain. "I gave you everything, and you stole from me."
"Marcus, please! We are in public!" Vivian pleaded, tears of genuine terror welling in her eyes as the surrounding guests began to stare.
"I don't care about the divorce anymore," I said to Marcus, leaning in slightly. "You will sign Clara’s settlement tonight. You will transfer the fifty million, and you will surrender custody. If you do, I will walk out of here and let you deal with Vivian’s embezzlement privately. If you refuse, I am forwarding that entire tablet to the FBI financial crimes division. You will both go to prison."
Marcus looked at me. He was cornered, bleeding out, and completely betrayed by the woman he had trusted to protect him.
"I’ll sign it," Marcus choked out, shoving Vivian away from him in absolute disgust.
I smiled. A cold, victorious expression.
May you like
"Good boy," I whispered.
I turned my back on the wreckage of their empire, took Jack’s arm, and walked away, leaving Vivian to face the wrath of the monster she thought she could control.
