Chapter 20 - The Unshatterable CrownThe fallout from the London operation was swift and apocalyptic.

Without their treasury, Alistair’s syndicate collapsed in a matter of weeks. The ghost of the Vanguard Coalition was permanently, violently exorcised from the world. Our law firm absorbed the remaining viable European assets, transforming us into a global, untouchable monolith.
One year later.
The air in Boston was warm, carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and fresh rain. The sprawling, historic estate was bathed in the golden light of late afternoon.
I stood on the massive wrap-around deck, wearing a flowing white linen dress, the breeze playing with my hair.
Down on the immaculate, expansive lawn, the world was perfectly, undeniably quiet.
Noah, now nine, was patiently teaching five-year-old Lily how to throw a baseball. The golden retriever bounded between them, barking happily. They were completely, unequivocally insulated from the darkness of the world by a fortress of blood and steel.
I heard the soft, familiar footsteps behind me.
Jack walked out through the French doors. The ruthless corporate investigator was completely gone. In his place was just a man—my partner, my equal, the love of my life. He wrapped his strong arms around me from behind, holding me flush against his solid chest.
"The final injunctions against Sterling’s remaining shell companies were signed this morning," Jack murmured, his voice a comforting rumble against my skin. "The board is clear, Claire. There is no one left to fight."
"There will always be someone who thinks they can take what we have built, Jack," I said softly, leaning back into his embrace.
"Let them try," Jack smiled, a rogue, brilliant expression. He leaned down, pressing a fierce, reverent kiss to my temple. "They will never know what hit them."
I thought about the journey that had brought me to this deck. I thought about Daniel, Vivian, Marcus, Victor, and Alistair. They had all looked at me and seen a target. They had seen a woman they could break, control, or consume.
They had all died in the dark, or rotted in concrete cells, completely broken by the very woman they had underestimated.
I reached up, lacing my fingers through Jack’s hair. He was my partner, my equal, the sword in the night that protected my light.
"We built it, Jack," I whispered, tears of profound, unshakeable joy pricking my eyes. "We finally finished building the fortress."
"And it is unbreakable, my queen," Jack promised, leaning down to capture my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our history and ignited our limitless future.
I looked out at the vast horizon, the golden sun reflecting off the endless expanse of the backyard.

The terrified, weeping mother in the hospital hallway was a ghost, buried permanently in the ashes of the past. The coward who had abandoned her had learned his lesson. The monsters who had threatened her were ruined.
I was victorious. I was loved. And this beautiful, brilliant empire of light was going to last forever.
