Chapter 21 - The Blackwood SyndicateWhen a ghost tries to drag you into the dark, you don't run. You turn on the floodlights.

By midnight, the penthouse had been transformed into a militarized bunker. Arthur’s private security contractors, led by a ruthless ex-intelligence operative named Elias, had locked down the perimeter. My cyber-warfare team was tearing through the digital wreckage of the Mercer mainframe.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the glittering, snowy city. My hand rested protectively over the heavy curve of my stomach.

"Julian was murdered," Arthur said, walking into the room and handing me a cup of decaf coffee. His voice was grim. "My contacts inside the federal bureau just confirmed it. Cyanide slipped into his cafeteria tray. The guards were bribed, the cameras were hacked, and the killer vanished. This wasn't a random hit, Claire. This was a flawless, untraceable execution."

"They used his death as a theatrical warning," I whispered, the cold reality settling over me. "Who has the power to infiltrate a maximum-security federal prison and simultaneously hijack a billion-dollar closed-loop mainframe?"

"Someone who owns the infrastructure," Elias grunted, stepping into the room with a decrypted tablet. "I traced the bounce-signal from the video feed. It was routed through a dozen shell companies, but the origin point is a private satellite network owned by Blackwood Global."

"Sebastian Blackwood," Arthur breathed, the name dropping into the room like a live grenade.

I turned around. "Who is Sebastian Blackwood?"

"He is a myth in the financial underworld," Arthur explained, his jaw tight. "He operates entirely on the dark web. He doesn't build companies; he weaponizes them. He buys distressed assets, funds illegal cartels, and controls the flow of unregulated digital currency. If Blackwood is the one who backed Alexander and Victoria... we are not fighting a business. We are fighting a sovereign criminal state."

"He wants the Mercer logistics network," I deduced, my mind operating with cold, architectural precision. "He wants to use our global shipping lanes to move illicit cargo under the radar of international customs. If he controls my algorithms, he controls the world's black market."

"We can't fight a ghost, Claire," Arthur said softly, stepping closer and cupping my face. "You are seven months pregnant. I am not putting you in the crosshairs of a cartel boss."

"I am already in the crosshairs, Arthur," I replied, my eyes hardening into chips of diamond. "Sebastian Blackwood thinks I am a soft target because I am a mother. He thinks the threat to my child will make me surrender."

I walked over to the digital smart-board, bringing up the encrypted code of our logistics mainframe.

"He gave me forty-eight hours to step down," I smiled, a dark, terrifying expression that made even Elias pause. "He wants my company? Fine. I’ll give him the keys. But I’m going to rig the locks with C-4."
