Chapter 8 - The Gala of AshesThe grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel was a masterpiece of obscene wealth and curated public relations. Crystal chandeliers swayed gently, casting a warm, golden glow over the sea of billionaires, politicians, and socialites. Champagne flowed like water, and the ambient chatter masked the vicious, cutthroat deals being made in the shadows.

I walked into the ballroom on Arthur’s arm, and the room practically ground to a halt. Heads turned. Whispers erupted like a wildfire. I was the woman who had dethroned her husband and seized a billion-dollar empire in a single afternoon. I owned the room before I even took a sip of my drink.
My eyes scanned the crowd with predatory precision. It didn't take long to find him.
Julian was standing near the terrace doors, looking nervous, sweaty, and out of place in a rented tuxedo. He was clutching a small, leather briefcase to his chest as if his life depended on it. Standing next to him, radiating arrogant, vulture-like energy, was Damian Cross.
“There,” I murmured to Arthur, nodding toward the terrace.
“I see them,” Arthur replied, his voice a low rumble. He subtly tapped the earpiece hidden in his ear. “Sarah, are the federal agents in position?”
“FBI cyber-crimes unit is standing by in the surveillance van out front,” Sarah’s voice crackled in our ears. “We are monitoring Vanguard’s servers. Give the signal when the handoff is complete.”
I took a deep breath, smoothing the silk of my red gown, and began to walk across the ballroom. The crowd parted for me like royalty.
Julian was in the middle of handing the leather briefcase to Damian when he saw me approaching. He froze, the color draining completely from his face. His hand shook so violently he almost dropped the case.
“Claire,” Julian choked out, stepping backward until his back hit the glass doors.
“Julian,” I smiled, a polite, chilling expression. I turned my gaze to the Vanguard CEO. “And Damian Cross. What an unexpected surprise to see you two engaging in a clandestine meeting at a charity gala. I hope I’m not interrupting a transaction.”
Damian sneered, recovering his composure quickly. He snatched the briefcase from Julian’s trembling hands. “You’re too late, Claire. Julian just secured his future, and Vanguard Capital just secured the keys to your little tech empire. By Monday morning, your algorithms will be ours, and your stock will be worthless.”
“Is that so?” I asked, arching a perfect eyebrow. I took a delicate sip of my champagne. “Julian, did you tell Damian that the files on that drive were heavily encrypted?”
Julian swallowed hard, sweat dripping down his forehead. “I... I gave him the decryption keys.”
“Oh, Julian,” I sighed, shaking my head with profound, untouchable pity. “You always were so terrible with technology. You didn't download our source code. You downloaded a honeypot file I planted on the servers yesterday morning.”
Damian Cross frowned, his arrogant smirk faltering. “What are you talking about? This is a bluff. My tech team is accessing the drive right now via remote uplink.”
Right on cue, Damian’s smartphone began to buzz violently in his tuxedo pocket. He pulled it out, answering it with a frantic, “What is it?!”
I watched the exact moment the Vanguard CEO’s soul left his body. His face went dead white. His jaw dropped.
“What do you mean the servers are wiping?!” Damian screamed into the phone, completely abandoning his societal decorum. “Shut it down! Pull the plug!”
“You can't pull the plug, Damian,” I whispered, stepping entirely into his personal space, the scent of expensive perfume and absolute ruin wrapping around him. “The Trojan virus Julian just uploaded into your mainframe is rewriting your entire corporate database. You didn't steal my company. Julian just burned yours to the ground.”
Damian dropped the phone. He turned to Julian, his eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You set me up! You framed me!”
“No! I didn't know! She tricked me!” Julian shrieked, backing away in sheer terror.
Before Damian could lunge at my ex-husband, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom burst open. Six FBI agents in tactical suits marched directly through the crowd of horrified billionaires, straight toward the terrace.
“Julian Mercer and Damian Cross,” the lead agent barked, flashing his badge. “You are both under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”
Julian fell to his knees for the second time in a month. He wept openly, begging for a lawyer, screaming that I had set him up. But no one cared. The agents hauled him to his feet, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
As they dragged the pathetic, broken man who had once been my husband out of the gala in front of the flashing cameras of the socialite press, I didn't feel an ounce of regret. I felt entirely, perfectly free.
Arthur stepped up beside me, wrapping his strong arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his side.

“Checkmate,” Arthur murmured, kissing the side of my head.
“Game over,” I replied, turning my back on the wreckage and walking back to the party.
