Chapter 3 - The Interception

Evelyn’s flight landed at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at 3:40 p.m. local time.
She walked through the terminal, feeling the warm Pacific breeze through the open-air concourse.
She wasn’t hiding behind sunglasses.
She wasn’t crying.
She was reading her new script.
Then, a hand grabbed the front of her luggage cart.
“Evelyn.”
She stopped.
Grant stood in the middle of the arrivals terminal.
His hair was a mess.
He hadn’t shaved.
He was still wearing the same trousers from New Year’s Eve, paired with a wrinkled sweater.
People were staring.
Some were already pulling out their phones.
“What are you doing here, Grant?”
“You didn’t take anything.”
“I took what was mine.”
“You left your rings. You left the accounts.” He stepped closer, his voice cracking. “You left me.”
“You left me fourteen months ago,” Evelyn said calmly. “I just finally closed the door.”
“It was a mistake.”
“Meeting her parents wasn’t a mistake. It was a rehearsal.”
Grant flinched.
“My mother pushed for it. Brooke pushed for it. I was drunk, Evelyn. I didn’t even want to be there.”
“Then you are a coward.”
The word hung between them.
“You are a billionaire who controls thousands of employees, but you let a twenty-five-year-old and your mother manage your marriage.”
Grant reached for her hand.
She stepped back.
“Evelyn, please. I kicked her out. I fired my PR team when they tried to smear you. I flew across the country because I can’t breathe without you.”
“You’ll learn.”
“I don’t want to learn!”
His voice echoed loudly across the terminal.
A security guard took a step forward, but Evelyn raised a hand to signal she was fine.
“You didn’t fly here because you love me, Grant,” she said softly.
May you like
“I do love you.”
“No. You flew here because for the first time in your life, someone told you no. And you can’t buy your way out of it.”
