Chapter 4 - The Public Reckoning

Grant’s phone vibrated in his pocket.
It had been vibrating for nine hours.
He ignored it.
“I will give up the company,” he said desperately. “I’ll cut off my mother. Whatever you want.”
Evelyn looked at him with profound sadness.
“I wanted a husband who came home.”
She turned and began walking toward the exit.
“Evelyn!”
He followed her out into the Hawaiian sun.
A black SUV was waiting at the curb.
Valerie Scott stood beside it.
Valerie looked at Grant with absolute disgust.
“Go home, Grant,” Valerie said.
Grant ignored her.
“Evelyn, you can’t just go back to acting like the last eleven years never happened.”
Evelyn stopped with her hand on the car door.
“I’m not pretending they never happened,” she said. “I’m making sure they never happen again.”
She climbed into the SUV.
As the door closed, Grant’s phone rang again.
This time, he answered it.
It was his mother.
“Grant! Thank God. The board is threatening a vote of no confidence. The stock is plummeting. Evelyn’s post triggered a massive PR nightmare, and Brooke just sold an exclusive interview to a tabloid claiming you promised her a wedding!”
Grant stared at the black SUV pulling away from the curb.
“Grant? Are you listening to me? We need to fix this!”
He lowered the phone.
He didn’t hang up.
He just let it drop from his hand onto the concrete.

Now, standing alone outside an airport three thousand miles from home, he finally realized he had nothing.
