Chapter 1 - The Man Who Walked Past Everyone Else

Nico Rossi crossed the ballroom without hurrying.

That was the first thing Luna noticed.

He did not rush toward her as though he were reacting to a scandal. He did not glance nervously toward Liam. He did not ask anyone’s permission.

He simply walked.

The guests made room for him without realizing they were doing it.

Nico Rossi wore a black tuxedo with no unnecessary decoration, a silver watch, and the expression of a man who had spent decades being watched by people hoping to guess his next move. He was older than Liam by more than thirty years, but there was nothing fragile or softened about him.

His dark hair was touched with gray at the temples.

A scar crossed one eyebrow.

And his eyes, when they reached Luna, were warm in a way she had not expected.

“Luna,” he said.

Her pulse jumped.

“Mr. Rossi.”

His mouth curved faintly.

“You may call me Nico.”

Behind him, Liam had gone rigid.

Amber’s fingers tightened around his arm.

Valentina Rossi stared at Luna as though she had appeared in the ballroom carrying a weapon.

Maybe, Luna thought, I did.

Not a weapon anyone could see.

Just the truth.

“You look beautiful,” Nico said.

Luna’s throat tightened.

No one had said that to her in months without attaching a condition to it.

You look beautiful when you wear this.

You would look beautiful if you tried harder.

You used to look beautiful.

Liam had once told her she looked best when she did not “draw too much attention.” He had discouraged the red dress in the store, saying it was not really her.

Now Nico stood before her, seeing her in it.

“Thank you,” she said.

He offered his arm.

“Would you walk with me?”

Luna looked at his arm.

Then over his shoulder.

Liam was staring at them.

Amber’s smug smile had vanished.

Maya’s voice echoed in Luna’s head from earlier that evening.

You do not need to prove you are better than Amber. You only need to remember you are not less.

Luna placed her hand lightly through Nico’s arm.

“Yes.”

The reaction was immediate.

Whispers moved across the ballroom.

Not loud enough to be called conversation.

But loud enough that everyone heard.

Nico Rossi led Luna toward the center of the room, past the champagne tower, the photographers, and the guests who had spent the last hour congratulating Liam on his new relationship.

Liam finally stepped forward.

“Dad,” he said.

Nico stopped.

Liam looked from Luna to his father.

His face was pale.

“What are you doing?”

Nico’s expression did not change.

“I am speaking with Luna.”

“She is my girlfriend.”

Luna almost laughed.

Almost.

Nico looked at his son.

“Was,” he said quietly.

The word landed like a slap.

Amber recovered first.

She smiled at Luna.

“This is a little dramatic, isn’t it? We made a mistake. You don’t need to parade his father around to get attention.”

Luna turned toward her sister.

For years, Amber had known exactly where to hurt her.

She called Luna boring when they were children. Too cautious in college. Too ordinary after graduation. She borrowed Luna’s clothes, copied her hair color, flirted with men who looked at Luna first, then acted innocent when Luna objected.

Luna had spent most of her life being told that Amber was simply more confident.

But confidence did not require cruelty.

“You’re right,” Luna said softly. “I do not need attention.”

Amber’s smile faltered.

“I need honesty.”

Liam took a step closer.

“Luna, can we talk privately?”

“No.”

“Please.”

The word sounded strange coming from him.

Luna looked at Nico.

He did not speak for her. He did not step between them. He only remained beside her, calm and solid, letting her choose.

That was the difference.

Liam had always wanted Luna quiet.

Nico simply waited to hear what she wanted to say.

“You had a chance to talk,” Luna told Liam. “At 11:23 last night, in my bed, with my sister.”

The nearest guests stopped pretending not to listen.

Liam’s face changed.

Amber’s eyes widened.

“Luna,” she hissed.

“No,” Luna said. “You do not get to be embarrassed now. You should have thought about embarrassment before you laughed at me in my own apartment.”

Nico’s gaze moved to Liam.

“Is this true?”

Liam looked away.

That was answer enough.

The air around Nico seemed to turn colder.

For the first time, Luna understood why people watched him so carefully.

He did not need to raise his voice.

His disappointment carried more weight than anger.

“You betrayed her,” Nico said.

“Dad, it is complicated.”

“No,” Nico replied. “It is cowardly.”

Valentina rose from her chair.

“Nico, this is not the place.”

He looked toward his former wife.

“No,” he said. “The place was Luna’s home. My son chose to dishonor her there.”

Liam’s jaw tightened.

“You do not know our relationship.”

“I know enough.”

Nico turned back to Luna.

“You should not have been treated that way.”

The words were simple.

But Luna felt them in the place where the humiliation had been living since the night before.

May you like

She blinked quickly.

“I know that now.”
