Chapter 6: The Tribeca Whisper

The restaurant in Tribeca was entirely devoid of the pretentious flash that defined the establishments Liam used to drag her to. There were no blinding chandeliers, no paparazzi loitering by the velvet ropes, and no desperate socialites climbing over each other for a corner booth.

It was softly lit, smelling of roasted garlic and old wine. It was a place for people who already had power and no longer felt the need to perform it.

Nico pulled out her chair. He did it with an effortless, ingrained courtesy that made Luna’s chest tighten. Liam had always walked ahead of her, expecting her to keep up. Nico waited until she was settled before taking the seat across from her.

He wore a dark charcoal suit, the jacket unbuttoned, exuding a quiet, relaxed authority. The silver at his temples caught the dim candlelight, and when he looked at her, his dark eyes held a level of focused attention she had never experienced.

"You look beautiful, Luna," Nico said. It wasn't a line. It was a statement of absolute fact.

Luna felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks, but she didn't look away. "Thank you. And thank you for this. For a place where I don't feel like I have to shout to be heard."

"You should never have to shout," Nico replied, picking up the wine list. "A man who forces a woman to raise her voice just to be acknowledged is a man who is terrified of what she actually has to say."

The waiter arrived, and Nico ordered in flawless, quiet Italian. When they were alone again, the air between them felt thick, charged with the undeniable reality of what they were doing.

"People are going to talk, Nico," Luna said, deciding to address the elephant in the room immediately. She traced the rim of her water glass. "If anyone sees us. The billionaire and his son’s ex-fiancée. The media will frame it as a revenge plot. They will call me a gold digger, and they will call you..."

"A monster?" Nico offered, a small, self-deprecating smile touching his lips. "Luna, the media has called me a ruthless predator for thirty years because of how I built my company. I stopped caring about their headlines a decade before you were born. The only opinion I care about tonight is yours."

He reached across the table, his large, warm hand resting lightly over hers. He didn't grip it. He just offered the contact.

"Are you afraid of the whisper, Luna?" he asked softly.

Luna looked at his hand, then up into his eyes. Two years ago, the thought of social scandal would have paralyzed her. She would have molded herself into whatever shape Liam needed to avoid a public scene.

"No," Luna said, her voice steady. "I'm not afraid. I just want to make sure you know what you're walking into. Liam will not handle this with grace."

"Liam is a boy who broke a diamond because he didn't know how to handle the sharp edges," Nico said, his voice dropping to a low, protective register. "I am not responsible for my son’s lack of vision. And I will not deny myself the company of the most brilliant woman I know just to protect his fragile ego."

The dinner progressed seamlessly. They talked about her business, about his early days struggling in real estate, about art, and about the future. For two hours, the ghost of Liam vanished completely.

But as they left the restaurant, stepping out into the cool New York night, a flashbulb erupted from across the street.

A freelance photographer, hoping to catch a celebrity leaving a nearby club, had recognized Nico. The lens captured them perfectly: Nico’s hand resting protectively on the small of Luna’s back as he guided her toward his waiting car.

Nico’s jaw tightened, his security detail immediately stepping forward.

"Let him go," Nico ordered his men, his voice instantly shifting from the warm date to the icy CEO. He looked down at Luna. "Are you alright?"

Luna looked at the photographer scrambling away into the night. She took a deep breath, letting the crisp air fill her lungs.

"I'm perfectly fine," Luna said, stepping into the car. The secret was out. And for the first time in her life, Luna was ready for war.
