Chapter 2 - The Daughter No One Protected

The charity gala continued around them, but the mood had changed.
The orchestra played softly near the stage. Waiters moved between tables carrying trays of champagne. Guests who had arrived expecting auctions, speeches, and photographs now watched the Rossi family fracture beneath gold chandeliers.
Luna should have felt triumphant.
She had imagined Liam’s face when he saw her with Nico.
She had imagined Amber realizing that she was not the only woman capable of turning heads.
But as she stood there, she felt something different.
Sadness.
Not for Liam.
Not even for Amber.
For herself.
For the woman who had spent three years accepting less than love because she thought being chosen by Liam meant she was lucky.
Nico seemed to understand.
“Would you like some air?” he asked quietly.
Luna nodded.
He led her through a side corridor to a terrace overlooking Manhattan. The night air was cool. Below them, traffic moved like ribbons of light through the city.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Luna exhaled.
“I did not come here because I wanted to hurt them.”
Nico leaned against the railing beside her.
“I know.”
“I wanted to feel like I mattered.”
“You do.”
She gave a weak smile.
“You barely know me.”
“I know what it looks like when someone is trying not to fall apart in public.”
Luna looked at him.
“Did you know Liam was cheating?”
Nico was quiet too long.
Her stomach tightened.
“I knew he had become careless,” he said finally. “I knew he was lying to people. I did not know he had betrayed you with Amber.”
“You suspected something.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
His face hardened—not at her, but at himself.
“I should have asked you whether you were all right.”
“Yes,” Luna said. “You should have.”
Nico nodded once.
“You are right.”
She had expected defense.
An explanation.
Instead, he accepted the truth.
The quiet sincerity in that hurt more than if he had argued.
“My marriage to Valentina ended for similar reasons,” Nico said. “Not the same betrayal. But the same silence. I let problems stay hidden because I thought keeping the peace was the same as protecting a family.”
Luna looked out at the city.
“It isn’t.”
“No,” he said. “It is not.”
Inside the ballroom, applause rose as the auction began.
Nico glanced toward the doors.
“You do not have to return.”
“I know.”
“Your friend Maya is waiting near the entrance. I asked my assistant to make certain she had a car when she wanted one.”
Luna looked at him sharply.
“You asked your assistant?”
“I did not have her followed,” he said. “She introduced herself to me near the bar and informed me that if I hurt you, she would make my life difficult.”
Luna laughed.
A real laugh this time.
“That sounds like Maya.”
“She is impressive.”
“She is terrifying.”
“So I have been told.”
The terrace doors opened.
Liam stepped outside.
Nico’s expression cooled instantly.
“Dad,” Liam said. “I need to talk to Luna alone.”
“No,” Luna said.
Liam stopped.
She walked toward him slowly.
He looked tired now. His carefully styled hair was falling slightly out of place. His confidence had cracked. For the first time in years, he did not look like the man who always believed he could talk his way out of consequences.
“I made a mistake,” he said.
“You made a choice.”
“I was confused.”
“You were in my bed with my sister.”
“Amber means nothing to me.”
Luna’s face went still.
Inside, Amber stood alone near the ballroom doors.
She heard him.
Liam saw her too late.
Amber’s expression collapsed.
“You said you loved me,” she whispered.
Liam rubbed a hand across his face.
“I did not mean it like that.”
Amber laughed once, brokenly.
“Of course you didn’t.”
Luna looked at both of them.
For a long time, she thought Amber had won something.
But there was nothing to win in being chosen by a man who could betray one woman and dismiss another in the same breath.
“You deserve each other,” Luna said quietly.
Then she turned away.
Liam reached for her arm.
Nico moved.
Not violently.
Not dramatically.
He stepped between them and caught Liam’s wrist before Liam could touch her.
His voice was almost gentle.
“You will not put your hands on her.”
Liam stared at his father.
“Are you serious?”
Nico released him immediately.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Liam looked frightened.
May you like
Not of Nico’s power.
Of losing his father’s respect.
