Chapter 1 - The Turbulence of Truth

"What?" The word scraped against my dry throat, barely a whisper over the low, constant hum of the jet engines. The floor beneath my stockinged feet didn't just tilt; it felt as though the entire aircraft had entered a sudden, terrifying freefall.

"Tyler Bennett," Julian Mercer repeated, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made the air in the private cabin feel suffocatingly thin. "He noticed you were missing from your apartment at approximately 2:15 AM. By 3:00 AM, he had bribed a contact at the airline to access the passenger manifest. He is currently standing at the arrivals gate at SFO with two men you don't know, waiting for you to walk out of Terminal 3."

My hands went completely numb. The fading yellow bruise on my wrist suddenly throbbed, a phantom ache reminding me of the violent, unpredictable monster I had just risked my life to flee. "How could you possibly know that?"

Julian didn't blink. He reached into the inner pocket of his immaculate charcoal suit and pulled out a sleek, encrypted smartphone. He tapped the screen once and slid it across the polished walnut table.

I looked down. It was a live feed from a security camera inside the San Francisco International Airport terminal. There, pacing aggressively near the baggage claim, was Tyler. He was wearing his faded leather jacket, looking disheveled, furious, and terrifyingly real. My chest tightened, panic seizing my lungs in an icy grip. I had maxed out my credit card. I had left everything behind. I had taken a sleeping pill hoping to wake up free, only to discover I was flying straight into a meticulously laid trap.

"He owes money, Emma," Julian said, his voice a smooth, lethal baritone that somehow managed to anchor my spiraling panic. "A substantial amount of money to people who do not accept apologies. He thinks you took his ledger when you packed your bags. He isn't waiting for you to beg for forgiveness; he's waiting for you to secure his survival."

I backed away from the table, my knees hitting the edge of the plush leather seat. "Who are you?" I demanded again, my voice shaking. "You aren't just an art collector. Art collectors don't have live access to airport security cameras. They don't track women on cross-country flights."

Julian leaned back, steepling his fingers. "I am a businessman who operates in sectors the authorities prefer to ignore. My syndicate controls the ports on the West Coast. Tyler made the catastrophic mistake of borrowing from one of my subordinates and attempting to defraud us. But my interest in this situation is not Tyler."

He stood up, closing the distance between us with a slow, deliberate grace that belonged to an apex predator. He stopped just inches away, radiating a terrifying, intoxicating heat.

"My interest is you, Emma," Julian murmured, looking down at me. "I watched you in that gallery for six months. I watched you endure that parasite, waiting for the day you would finally find the courage to run. You found it tonight. But you are running into a wall. If you walk out of those doors alone, Tyler will drag you back into hell."

"And your solution?" I choked out, staring up at the sharp, unforgiving lines of his jaw.

"My solution is absolute protection," Julian stated, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to my eyes. "When this plane lands, you will not walk out as Tyler Bennett's runaway girlfriend. You will walk out on my arm. And by tomorrow night, you will be my wife. Under my name, you become completely, permanently untouchable."
