Chapter 5 - The Masterpiece

I never saw Tyler Bennett again. I didn't ask what happened to him, but I knew he was locked away in a federal penitentiary on a myriad of charges that Julian's network had seamlessly orchestrated. The threat was permanently erased from the earth.
A year later, the San Francisco gallery was the crown jewel of the city's art district. The grand opening anniversary gala was a massive success, packed with elite buyers, critics, and artists.
I stood in the center of the room, wearing a stunning, backless emerald gown, holding a glass of champagne. The room was loud, vibrant, and alive—everything my life hadn't been a year ago.
The crowd parted as Julian walked toward me. He was wearing a classic black tuxedo, looking every inch the terrifying, untouchable boss that he was to the outside world. But when his dark eyes met mine, all the danger melted away, leaving only absolute, unwavering devotion.

"I bought another painting tonight," he confessed, a rare, boyish smile touching his lips.
I laughed, looking up at him. "Julian, you already own half the inventory. You can't just buy out your own wife's gallery."
"I can, and I will," he replied, his gaze softening as he looked down at me. "Because every piece of art in this room is a testament to the fact that you survived. You didn't just escape the dark, Emma. You built an empire in the light."

I reached up, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. I had boarded that overnight flight with a maxed-out credit card and a bruised wrist, praying to simply disappear. Instead, I had woken up next to a monster who taught me how to fight, how to heal, and ultimately, how to love without fear.
Julian Mercer had promised me absolute protection on that airplane. But looking at the life we had built together, I knew the truth. We hadn't just protected each other; we had saved each other. And that was the greatest masterpiece of all.
