Chapter 2 - The San Francisco Trap

The descent into San Francisco was an agonizing blur of adrenaline and disbelief. As the landing gear deployed with a heavy thud, I sat rigidly in the plush first-class seat, staring at the diamond ring Julian had casually slid onto my finger ten minutes earlier. It was a flawless, emerald-cut stone that felt heavier than a shackle.

"It's a business arrangement," I reminded him, my voice trembling as the plane touched down on the tarmac. "A marriage on paper. In exchange for protection."

"An arrangement, Emma. Yes," Julian replied, adjusting his cuffs. But the dark, possessive gleam in his eyes suggested he had no intention of treating this like a mere contract.

When the cabin doors opened, I didn't step out into the crowded terminal to fight my way to a taxi. I stepped into a highly orchestrated, terrifyingly efficient machine. Four men in dark suits were waiting for us at the gate. They didn't speak; they simply fell into a tight, protective formation around us. Julian placed his hand firmly on the small of my back. It wasn't a gripping, bruising hold like Tyler's; it was a steady, warm presence that guided me forward.

As we approached the escalators leading down to baggage claim, my breath caught in my throat.

There he was.

Tyler was standing near the bottom of the escalator, his eyes frantically scanning the crowds. When he saw me, a twisted, victorious smile broke across his face. "Emma!" he shouted, shoving a businessman out of his way as he lunged toward the escalator. "You stupid bitch, did you really think you could—"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Before Tyler could even reach the bottom step, two of Julian’s men moved with terrifying, blinding speed. They didn't draw weapons, but they didn't need to. They intercepted Tyler, slamming him hard against the nearest concrete pillar, pinning his arms behind his back with effortless, brutal precision. Tyler screamed, thrashing wildly, but he was entirely neutralized in seconds.

Julian didn't break his stride. He guided me smoothly past the violent scene as if we were merely walking past a spilled cup of coffee.

"Julian!" Tyler screamed, suddenly recognizing the man walking beside me. The color instantly drained from Tyler's face, his arrogant fury evaporating into absolute, unadulterated terror. "Mr. Mercer! Please! She has the ledger! I swear to God, she—"

Julian finally stopped. He turned slowly, looking at Tyler the way one might look at an insect struggling in a web.

"Do not speak to my fiancée, Bennett," Julian commanded, his voice echoing coldly through the terminal. "If you ever look at her, speak her name, or attempt to breathe the same air as her again, I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your painfully short life regretting it. Take him away."

The men dragged a weeping, terrified Tyler out the side doors. I stood frozen, my heart pounding so hard my ribs ached. Julian turned back to me, his expression softening imperceptibly. He lifted his hand, gently brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.

"You are safe now, Emma," he whispered. "Welcome to California."
