Chapter 2 - The Confession in the Dark

The next several hours were a blur of blinding surgical lights, the chaotic shouting of medical staff, and the cold bite of anesthesia.

When I finally opened my eyes, the harsh lights were gone, replaced by the soft, dim glow of a private recovery suite. The rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor was the only sound in the room. I felt heavy, exhausted, and incredibly sore.

My hands flew to my stomach. It was flat.

Panic seized me, but before I could cry out, a massive shadow detached itself from the corner of the room. Adrian stepped into the dim light. He looked utterly wrecked. His dark shirt was rumpled, his hair was messy, and the exhaustion on his face was profound.

"She's safe," he said instantly, reading the terror in my eyes. He walked to the edge of my bed and gently took my hand. "She's in the NICU. She's small, and she was early, but she is breathing on her own. She's a fighter. Just like her mother."

Tears of absolute relief flooded my eyes. "I want to see her."

"As soon as you can sit in a wheelchair, I will take you," Adrian promised, sitting in the chair beside my bed. He didn't let go of my hand. In fact, he held it with a desperate grip, as if he were afraid I would vanish into thin air.

"Why did you leave me, Adrian?" The question slipped out before I could stop it. The anesthesia had stripped away my defenses. "If you still care this much... why did you divorce me?"

Adrian looked down at our joined hands. The silence stretched for a long, painful minute. When he finally looked up, the truth in his dark eyes was devastating.

"Because I loved you too much to bury you," he whispered.

I stared at him, confused.

"Six months ago, the Russian syndicate made a move on Chicago," Adrian explained, his voice hard and cold. "They couldn't get to me. So, they decided to get to my heart. My security chief intercepted a hit squad three blocks from our house. They had blueprints of our home, photos of you, and a timeline of your daily routine."

A chill ran down my spine. I had known Adrian was powerful, but he had always kept the violence completely shielded from our marriage.

"If they knew you were my weakness, they would never stop hunting you," Adrian continued, his voice cracking slightly. "So, I had to convince them that you meant nothing to me. I filed for divorce abruptly. I sent lawyers to make it look cold, calculated, and entirely devoid of affection. I made sure the streets whispered that Adrian Moretti was tired of his civilian wife."

"You made me believe you hated me," I whispered, the heartbreak of the past six months bubbling to the surface.

"I made the city believe it, and you were collateral damage to that lie," he said, leaning his forehead against my knuckles. "It was the only way to get the target off your back while I went to war. It took me five months to dismantle the Russians. Five months of blood and fire. By the time it was over, I thought I had broken your heart so completely that you would never let me back in. I didn't know you were carrying my child. If I had known..."

He looked up, and Chicago's most feared mafia boss had tears shining in his eyes. "If I had known, I would have burned the city to the ground and locked you in a vault to keep you safe."
