Chapter 4 - The Arrival and The Statement

A week later, the day finally arrived to bring Eliana home.

The exit from the hospital was nothing short of a military operation. I held the tiny, swaddled bundle tightly against my chest as Adrian walked beside me, his arm wrapped firmly around my waist. We were surrounded by a phalanx of security, but Adrian’s gaze was sweeping the perimeter, calculating every angle, every shadow.

We didn't go back to the small apartment I had been renting. We went straight to the massive, fortified estate in the Chicago suburbs where we had lived during our marriage.

When the iron gates swung open and the car pulled up to the grand entrance, my breath caught. The house looked exactly as I remembered it, but something was different.

The entire front lawn was lined with black SUVs. At least fifty men in dark suits stood at attention along the driveway. These weren't just security guards; these were the capos, the lieutenants, the ranking members of the Moretti syndicate.

Adrian helped me out of the car. He didn't rush me inside. Instead, he led me and our newborn daughter to the top of the marble steps, turning to face his entire organization.

The men fell completely silent.

"Look closely," Adrian’s voice boomed over the sprawling estate, carrying the weight of absolute authority. "This is my wife. And this is my daughter, Eliana Moretti."

He paused, letting the reality sink in. He was publicly reclaiming me, painting the ultimate target on his own back to ensure everyone knew where his loyalties lay.

"For the past six months, you believed a lie," Adrian continued. "You believed I cast her aside. Let me be very clear. If anyone breathes a word of disrespect toward my family, if anyone attempts to use them for leverage, or if anyone fails to protect them with their own lives..."

He didn't need to finish the threat. The silence from the men was a sworn oath.

"She is the queen of this family," Adrian finished. "And her word is my word. Am I understood?"

"Yes, Boss," the men replied in unison, a chorus of deep voices echoing off the stone walls of the estate.

Adrian nodded, satisfied. He turned to me, the hard, terrifying boss melting away, leaving only the devoted husband and father. He gently kissed Eliana’s forehead, then kissed my lips.

"Welcome home," he whispered.
